Indicators of excellence

  • The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has a distinguished record in research both nationally and internationally. Of the 13 areas designated by the University as research strengths, six are based within the Faculty: Archaeology; History; Linguisitics; Literature and Culture;, Politics; and Sociology.
  • The research strength of the Faculty overall is well illustrated by the fact that a high number of its members are elected Fellows of The Australian Academy of the Humanities or the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
  • Research within the Faculty is also supported by a number of Institutes and Centres, some of which are based within the Faculty.
  • The Faculty is arguably the strongest amongst its peers in the country in terms of the significant books published by its members in a wide range of areas of scholarship.
  • A number of the Faculty’s staff play a prominent role in public discussion, especially in the national media, on cultural, social and political affairs.
  • Faculty staff also have a strong presence at conferences, writers’ festivals and public lectures.

Academy membership

The Faculty has over 30 members who are fellows of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Fellows of the Academies are elected by their peers on the basis of having achieved a very high level of scholarly distinction in one or more disciplines of either the Social Sciences or Humanities.
