Bachelor of Arts

An education in Arts will do more than prepare you for a job… it will prepare you for a career. Whether you undertake an Arts degree for the love of an area of study, for the intellectual and personal challenge, or for its direct relevance to a particular industry sector, our aim is to ensure that you gain the skills you need to be successful in the global workplace.

Employers seek flexible, well-informed graduates who are sophisticated communicators and capable of thinking analytically as well as creatively. The world of work is changing rapidly and graduates will need to take a global outlook and be adaptable in order to succeed.

New opportunities and new ways of working will continually present themselves; an Arts degree provides a rich base of skills and knowledge on which to build with professional postgraduate programs and training in the workplace.

Bachelor of Archaeology

The breadth of our courses and range of research and practical skills stand our graduates in good stead in any area of employment. Most of our Honours graduates find employment directly related to their archaeological training in:

  • Heritage Management (e.g. with Aboriginal Affairs Victoria or Heritage Victoria)
  • Archaeological and environmental impact assessment (as private consultants)
  • Museums (as curators or collections managers)
  • Universities (as researchers or lecturers).

Bachelor of Asian Studies

Graduates of the Asians Studies Porgram at La Trobe University have gone on to careers in a range of fields: the public service, large companies, small businesses, banks, the teaching of Asian languages in schools, education in cross cultural communication in business and other organisations, teaching English to foreigners, interpreting and translating, social work and work amidst ethnic communities in Australia. Within Australia, Asian Studies graduates are sought in business, health, eduational and social services working for the Australian community. Graduates find work abroad in the diplomatic service, international trade and commerce, the manufacturing industry and overseas eduational and community-aid projects. Fluency in an Asian language greatly enhances a professional education as Australia is increasing its connections with its Asian neighbours in the areas of trade, government and culture.

Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary European Studies

In a globalising world, the Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary European Studies prepares you for many Europe-related occupations: business, trade, government and non-government organisations, teaching, translating and interpreting. Focusedflexibility is the hallmark of the Contemporary European Studies degree. Students can demonstrate to employers a comprehensive mix of up-to-date European cultural awareness and language skills with Europe-related units in humanities, social sciences, tourism and business. Cultural sensitivity, an open-ness to difference, and good communication skills – in a foreign or domestic setting – will stand graduates of the Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary European Studies in good stead in today ’s everchanging world.

Bachelor of Creative Arts

As writing is the core of this Bachelor of Creative Arts degree, it will provide a strong basis for a wide range of careers. Graduates would have excellent employment prospects in publishing and editing, writing, arts criticism, scriptwriting, performance and other arts related fields in film, media and the theatre. The combination of disciplines in the degree is particularly well suited to teaching. The degree will offer a pathway to more specialised further studies, like graduate diplomas in teaching and librarianship.

Bachelor of International Development

Graduates of the International Development Program are working as project officers in Development NGOs, developing countries, journalism, and in a range of government departments and private corporations. Those taking a degree in the Bachelor of International Development will have enhanced opportunities of employment in fields related to the implementation and evaluation of developmental programs.

Bachelor of International Relations

The Bachelor of International Relations will prepare graduates for research, policy, administrative, training and other work in education, the media, international civil service, business, government and non-government organisations.

Bachelor of Journalism

Graduates of the Media Studies Program are working in newspapers and in radio and television production. Others are working in corporate communications, media consultancies, Internet related industries and in teaching.

Bachelor of Legal Studies

The Legal Studies course will prepare graduates for law-related work in several areas, including the public service, the administration of large law firms, commerce and industry, social welfare agencies, public interest organisations, community legal education and the operation of the courts and tribunals.

Bachelor of Media Studies

Graduates of the Media Studies Program are working in newspapers and in radio and television production. Others are working in corporate communications, media consultancies, internet related industries, teaching, public relations, journalism, commerce and the computer industry.

 

Bachelor of Social Sciences

Graduates of the Bachelor of Social Sciences will be prepared to work in a variety of fields relating to policy studies, research design and social science research methods. Employers looking for these skills include government (local, state and federal), corporations/private sector, trade unions, community and non-government organisations and consultancy firms working in the social, public and/or health policy areas.

 

Bachelor of Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning

Planners and people skilled in land use planning and environmental management are in high demand reflecting a growing society concern about the management of our urban and rural environments. Planners obtain employment with local and state governments, regional organisations and private consultants. Planners work in such diverse fields as policy development, strategic planning, development assessment, environmental studies and evaluation, design and development of major land uses and community consultation. Planners often work in multi-discipline teams with professions such as transport engineers, urban designers, heritage architects and economists. Planning is a profession involving accredited qualifications from the Planning Institute of Australia.

Bachelor of Visual Arts

As studio practice and training in visual language are the the core studies in the Bachelor of Visual Arts, they provide the entree into a huge visual arts industry. Graduates in visual arts have several career options. Many work in an art related industries, including curatorship in collections, commercial and public galleries, arts administration in municipal and government community arts programs, photojournalism, web design. colour and interior design consultancies. Others will choose the vocation of practicing exhibiting artist. Some choose to undertake further study including postgraduate studies; for instance in Education, going on to become teachers. Others pursue studies in Art Therapy and establish themselves in hospitals and institutions.

Visual communication is the major study in the Bachelor of Visual Arts (Graphic Design). The industry of 'graphic design' is a broad based industry, its practitioners can be found in all areas of both manufacturing and communications Design graduates are employed in education, media, public relations, advertising, publishing, manufacturing and leisure industries, community services, travel and marketing.

In addition to the career offerings in each of its single disciplines, Bachelor of Computing/Bachelor of Visual Arts double degree graduates will be able to access the growing areas of employment which require combined expertise in both computing and visual arts. The sum total of employment opportunities will be greater than the sum total of opportunities for each separate degree. Examples of typical job areas where job opportunities could be enhanced include: web developer, lingo programmer, video, sound or software engineer, web designer or consultant, database administrator or technical support.
