Research and Graduate Studies

The Committee will meet at least once each semester and will consult with the Faculty Planning and Budget Committee, as required, and report to the Faculty Board. Terms of reference were reviewed in October 1997. In June 2007, Faculty Board approved changes to the membership of the Committee and the establishment of two sub-committees (min. ref. 124.2 refers)

3. Terms of reference

(i) To develop and monitor the Faculty Research Management Plan.

(ii) To identify, support, encourage and promote the research strengths and research culture of the Faculty in accordance with the Faculty’s academic and strategic plan, and the University’s research aims.

(iii) To rank applicants for University administered Grants, Fellowships and Scholarships including: LTU Postdoctoral Fellowships and LTU Visiting Fellowships.

(iv) Within the Faculty, to approve procedures and guidelines for ranking postgraduate scholarships and to allocate Faculty research grants in accordance with published criteria.

(v) To develop strategies for increasing research funding for the Faculty and increasing the number of postgraduate scholarships available to students within the Faculty.

(vi) To review the academic progress of higher degree candidates referred by the Associate Dean (Research).

(vii) To review conditions of supervision and to ensure appropriate facilities are available for higher degree students as required.

(viii) To monitor higher degree completion rates.

(ix) To receive reports from the representative on the University Higher Degrees Committee and to take action as required.

(x) To consider and advise the Faculty Board on research policy matters as required.
