Course description
This double degree program provides graduates with two degrees and a qualification to teach in the secondary or adult education sectors - all within four years. Students are able to specialise in areas of interest, such as politics, history, or anthropology, providing the rigour and flexibility of an Arts Degree, while also studying education theory and practice for their education qualification. The curriculum includes subjects in teaching methods and education theory, and provides in-school teaching experience.

Content is king like never before, as the evolution of the internet threatens to deluge individuals with more information than they can handle. The Bachelor of Journalism provides students with the opportunity to hone their skills in research, writing, editing and media production in preparation for a media career, while also delivering a broad understanding of the medias role and operation. Every component of this degree is thoroughly grounded in industry-based education, with students required to write for upstart, La Trobes student-run web magazine for emerging journalists . Students are offered the opportunity to gain experience as an editor on upstart and to undertake internships in the media industry. Reflecting the myriad of potential work opportunities in newspapers, radio, television, websites and corporate communications teams, this course requires students to develop writing skills and a practical understanding of journalism across a range of media, including expertise in the professional and ethical use of social media. The program draws on the extensive journalism experience of La Trobe staff and features guest lectures and industry case studies from the breadth of Australias mediascape.

This course aims to prepare students for employment in mass communication industries, combining study of the media with the development of practical skills. As well as providing a broad understanding of the cultural, social, political and economic role of the media in society, and their operation and regulation, the program offers practical training in core areas of journalism, television and radio production. This course offers students more than the opportunity to become an expert in a particular field of knowledge. Students learn how to handle complex bodies of information, to analyse and evaluate information, and to argue clearly, using the spoken and written word and work with a constructive openness and flexibility of mind. Employers value these qualities for their durability in a climate of rapid technological change. The degree allows students to create a course that suits their own interests and needs. Course description
Sport journalists need a specific set of skills which equip them to deliver accurate, rapid and well-informed assessments of sports news and events. This vocationally-oriented course aims to equip students with the skills they need for a career across various platforms in the increasingly complex field of sport media. The curriculum combines a thorough grounding in the medias role and operation with practical research, writing, communication and production skills. The course offers specialised preparation for a sport journalism career by covering topics including sport management, sport reporting, and sport media production.

Course description
The growth of internet and social media communication alongside traditional media has made communication strategy critically important for organisations around the world. This industry-focused degree provides a thorough practical grounding in the realities and challenges of public relations. With practical insights into professional communication careers, this course offers practical training in developing and implementing ethical and effective communication strategies. Students will learn how to analyse and understand public relations, advertising, marketing and journalism and how they combine to shape public attitudes and actions. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake internships as part of their course, gaining valuable experience and a network of contacts. The course provides an outstanding grounding for careers in public relations and marketing communications. Accreditation with the Public Relations Institute of Australia is currently being negotiated.

Journalism placement opportunities

A media internship (MST3INT) is available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Media Studies and the Bachelor of Journalism. In this unit, students will develop contacts with, and work in, a media organisation. Students will develop an understanding of issues internal to the organisation such as its goals, structure, management and work practices.
