Brief Profile

Sven’s main research interests are Muslim social movements in Southeast Asia, as well as the range of intellectual and imaginative encounters between Muslims in different parts of the world. Sven is also involved in the development of three dialogue platforms that will bring together Australian, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern scholars, policy-makers and civil society activists, and assists Larry Marshall in coordinating the Muslim Leadership Programme. Sven has authored a number of publications, including journal articles and book chapters, and has presented papers at conferences in Australia, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. He was born, grew up and spent his formative years in East and Southeast Asia, and speaks English, French, Malay and Arabic in addition to his native German.
