Brief Profile

Simon completed his PhD dissertation, entitled "A Grammar of Aguaruna", at RCLT in 2007. His current project will study the four recognised languages of the Jivaroan family (Shuar, Achuar-Shiwiar, Huambisa and Aguaruna), spoken by about 85,000 people in the border area between Peru and Ecuador.

The initial stage will involve fieldwork in Peru on Aguaruna and Huambisa, and research on the history of colonial contacts with Jivaroan speakers. On the basis of this work, the project will investigate both the internal history of the Jivaroan family and genetic and areal relations between Jivaroan and other language families. This will be a major step forward in our understanding of the little-investigated areal contacts between Amazonian and Andean languages.
