Brief Profile

Julia McCormick is a practicing ceramic artist whose work is once-fired and the development of form embraces two directions: the wheel thrown decorative vessel pieces with hand built additions and the slab constructed decorative pieces. Emphasis is on producing clays and slips that enhance the surface of the form and the decorative techniques used, such as sgraffito, carving, stamping and impressing. McCormick has worked with the wood firing process since she was a student in the late 1970’s and the evolution of form and surface treatment is closely linked to the various types of wood fired kilns constructed and fired over the past 30 years. The focus of McCormick’s current research is based around the traditional Cretan wood fired updraft kiln.
