Brief profile

John Gatt-Rutter was Vaccari Professor in Italian Studies from 1991 to 2008 and has also held academic posts in Italian and European Studies at other univeristies in Australia and the UK. He has published volumes on the writers Italo Svevo and Oriana Fallaci and on writers and politics in Italy as well as a variety of articles and chapters on Italian and European literature, mainly of the 19th and 20th centuries. He has translated several literary works from Italian into English. Since 2005, his main research interest has been life writings by or about Italian Australians and the issues of dual or evolving identity, and, more generally, the literature of migration inside and outside Italy. As an Honorary Associate of the Italian Australian Institute, which is attached to La Trobe University (see link on this website), he does editorial work on the Institute's publications relating to many aspects of the lives of Italian Australians.
