La Trobe in the City - Ancient Mediterranean Lecture Series
Designed for everyone
La Trobe in the City is designed for anyone with an interest in history, literature or ancient cultures. Classes are informal and give participants a chance to learn about the ancient world and the Mediterranean. All lecturers are experts in their field and are both enthusiastic and experienced. Everyone is welcome and no prior knowledge is required.
Reading lists are provided for those who wish to read before or after the seminars, however, participants can undertake any reading according to their own schedules and preferences. Each class is separate and no prerequisites are required. Classes are not assessed and are designed to be stimulating and fun rather than labour intensive.
Classes
Classes in 2013 include ancient literature, culture and history from Greece, Rome and the Near East. We are also offering a six-week course on Mediterranean history, politics and culture, which focuses particularly in Greece, Italy and Spain. There are two Sicilian cookery workshops where participants will learn about the culture of food before learning how to cook in the traditional Sicilian style. The acclaimed Australian author David Malouf will discuss the connections between the Iliad and his book Ransom with Professor Chris Mackie. There will also be two public lectures with a cocktail reception in 2013 where participants can get to know each other, and the lecturers in a social setting.
Certificates and professional development
Certificates of Participation are available upon request for all classes. These can be used toward Victorian School Teachers’ professional development with the consent of the participant’s school.
