Academic Qualifications

Bryan holds a Bachelor of Science (biochemistry and physiology) from Griffith University in Queensland, a Graduate Diploma in Education (biology and chemistry) from Monash University in Victoria, a Graduate Diploma in Neurosciences from Latrobe University in Victoria and a Doctorate in Philosophy from La Trobe University in Victoria.

Current Positions

Bryan is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Human Biosciences, La Trobe University and Head of the Forensic Validation Testing Laboratory. His duties include undertaking research on the motor control of handwriting and its forensic applications, the design, manufacturing, delivery and analysis of forensic document validation cases for FDEs internationally and the supervision of graduate research projects. Bryan also conducts workshops and specialist training lectures both nationally and internationally.

Bryan is also a Senior Forensic Officer in the Document Examination Team of the Applied Science Branch, Chemistry Division, Victoria Police, Victoria Forensic Science Centre. His duties have included the management of the Team and its resources, the management of the examination of over 350 cases per annum, the examination of handwritten images, machine generated images and other aspects of documentary evidence, the preparation of laboratory reports and statements., the presentation of evidence to investigators and to the courts.

Since 1988 Bryan has been accepted as an expert in the documents field in the family, magistrates, county and supreme courts of Victoria.

Awards Received

Bryan has received the following awards:

  • The Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society (ANZFSS) medal for the most original scientific research at the 11th International Symposium on the Forensic Sciences in Hobart, 1992. Medal awarded for the research most likely to change the direction of a forensic discipline in the future.
  • The ESR Forensic Prize for the most innovative paper at the 12th ANZFSS International Symposium on the Forensic Sciences in Auckland, New Zealand, 1994.
  • The Independent Association of Questioned Document Examiners (America) Presidents Award for outstanding contribution to forensic science (Honolulu, 1996).
  • Both the ANZFSS Victoria Branch and National competitive scholarships to present research at the 13th ANZFSS International Symposium on the Forensic Sciences in Sydney, New South Wales, 1996.
  • The ANZFSS Victoria Branch competitive scholarship to present research at the 14th ANZFSS International Symposium on the Forensic Sciences in Adelaide, South Australia, 1996.
  • An Honorary Mention in the National Institute of Forensic Science ‘Best Paper in a Refereed Journal’ awards in 1997.
  • An Honorary Mention in the National Institute of Forensic Science ‘Best Paper in a Refereed Journal’ awards in 1999.
  • 'Best Paper' award in the National Institute of Forensic Science ‘Best Paper in a Refereed Journal’ awards in 1999.
  • Two Honourable mentions in the National Institute of Forensic Science ‘Best Paper in a Refereed Journal’ awards in 2000.
  • An Honourable mention in the National Institute of Forensic Science Henry Delaforce Award in 2001.
  • Registered Forensic Practitioner (Document Examination) with the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society.

Current Editorial Board Positions

Bryan currently serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Forensic Document Examination (USA).

Current Membership of Organisations and Groups

Bryan is an active member of The International Graphonomics Society, The Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society and The European Academy of Forensic Sciences.

Positions Held with Professional Organisations

Since 1992 Bryan has been a committee member with the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society. He was Vice-President in 1995, 1996 and 2002. Between 1997 and 1999 he was President and again occupies this position in 2003.

Forensic Teaching and Courses Conducted

Bryan has conducted national lectures and workshops including:

  • Victoria Police Detective Training Course, Economic CrimeCourse and the Bureau of Criminal Intelligence Course.
  • The Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society.
  • Handwriting workshops, funded by the National Institute of Forensic Science, Melbourne, New South Wales, Queensland and Perth, 1995.
  • Special Advisory Group (SAG) invited speaker in Canberra (1997), Brisbane (1998), Tasmania (1999) and the Gold Coast (2000) and Adelaide (2001).
  • Invited speaker at the Senior Managers of Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Laboratories (SMANZFL) in Perth (1999).

Bryan has conducted international lectures and workshops including:

  • New theoretical and analytical approaches to forensic handwriting examination to Forensic Document Laboratories in Canada, England, USA, Germany, Israel and Hong Kong, Malaysia and New Zealand.
  • Workshop presenter, on applied and theoretical issues in forensic handwriting examination, at the Association of Forensic Document Examiners conference in Texas, USA, 1996.
  • Workshop presenter, on applied and theoretical issues in forensic handwriting examination, at the National Association of Document Examiners conference in Baltimore, America, 1996.
  • Invited speaker at the 5th European Conference for Police and Government Handwriting Experts in The Hague, The Netherlands, 1996.
  • Workshop presenter, on applied and theoretical issues in forensic handwriting examination, at the New Zealand Police Document Laboratory, Wellington, New Zealand, 1997.
  • Workshop presenter, on applied and theoretical issues in forensic handwriting examination, at the 14th ANZFSS International Symposium on the Forensic Sciences held in Adelaide, Australia in 1998. This organisation funded the presentation.
  • Workshop presenter, on applied and theoretical issues in forensic handwriting examination, at the Queensland Police Document Laboratory, Brisbane, 1999.
  • Workshop presenter, on applied and theoretical issues in forensic handwriting examination, at the National Association of Document Examiners conference in New Mexico, America, 2000.
