PATHOLOGY

Welcome to the pathology home page. Pathology subjects are part of the curricula in the second year of the following courses within the Faculty of Health Sciences: Health Information Management, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Orthoptics, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, and Prosthetics and Orthotics.

Pathology is also taught within the following Human Bioscience subjects:

HBS22HPB Human Physiology, HBS31APA Advanced Physiology A, HBS32APB Advanced Physiology B

The study of theoretical pathology is traditionally separated into two parts, General and Systemic Pathology.

General pathology encompasses the basic concepts and pathological processes such as inflammation, healing, and vascular disorders which are common to a variety of specific disorders.

Systemic pathology is the study of diseases of the body systems. For example, diseases of the respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous and renal systems.

It is important that the student gains a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts and processes discussed in general pathology. Once this is accomplished the student can use this background to gain an understanding of diseases studied in systemic pathology.

As pathology is the study of abnormal structure and function, or the deviation from normal anatomy and physiology, it is expected that students will have gained an understanding of these disciplines before undertaking a course of study in pathology.
