Helping Students Stay Active on Campus

An involvement in University sport and sports clubs is a great way for students to meet people and make new friends. La Trobe has sports clubs which cater for all tastes and levels of activity! The La Trobe University Foundation recently received a $10,000.00 donation from the Myer Foundation to be used by the LTU Rowing Club. We thank the Myer Foundation for its generosity and 100 per cent of this donation will go directly to the Rowing Club.

Perhaps you remember your time on campus and might wish to have a further involvement with your chosen sport for the benefit of current students studying at your University? At La Trobe, there are recreational, competitive, and instructional clubs. Any assistance goes straight to the intended sports and donations are also fully tax deductible.

For further information, please contact Ms Jo Watts on +61 3 9479 5015 on how your donation might have the greatest impact.

New Bachelor and Master Double Degree programs in The Faculty of Heath Sciences

In 2009, La Trobe will be the first Victorian University to offer four year combined Bachelor and Master degree programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences. These 8 innovative double degree programs (listed below) will enable students to obtain both a Bachelor and Master degree in only four years.

Existing Course New Course
Bachelor of Health Information Management Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Health Information Management
Bachelor of Occupational Therapy Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Occupational Therapy Practice
Bachelor of Orthoptic and Ophthalmic Sciences Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Orthoptics
Bachelor of Physiotherapy Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Physiotherapy Practice
Bachelor of Podiatry Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Podiatric Practice
Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics
Bachelor of Social Work/Bachelor of Human Services Bachelor of Human Services and Master of Social Work
Bachelor of Speech Pathology Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Speech Pathology

The new programs lead to the same professional qualifications and registrations as the Universitys existing Bachelor degrees.

As part of this exciting curriculum development, all new double degree programs also share a common first year. This enables maximum flexibility for suitably qualified students to transfer between these programs, following first year and where places are available (with the exception of Bachelor of Human Services and Master of Social Work).

The common first year also provides students with a strong foundation for professional studies in their discipline. The focus on inter-professional learning allows students to collaborate with their peers in other disciplines which future employers look upon favourably.

The Faculty is also introducing a number of two year Graduate Entry (GEM) programs for students who have already undertaken an undergraduate qualification in health sciences or another discipline area.

In 2009, the Master of Occupational Therapy Practice and the Master of Speech Pathology will be offered. In 2010, the University plans to offer the Master of Health Information Management, Master of Orthoptics and Master of Social Work. The Master of Physiotherapy Practice, Master of Podiatric Practice and Master of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics will be offered in 2011.

For further details about these new programs, please refer to the Health Sciences Faculty website or contact +61 3 9479 3573.

Career and Networking Opportunities

Otesha Project

The Otesha Project (Australia): Cycling for Sustainability is currently seeking participants for two cycle tours: Brisbane to Newcastle (15 November to 22 December 2008) and Melbourne to Adelaide (18 January to 1 March 2009).

Since 2000, The Otesha Project (Aus.) has pedalled across Australia educating youth and raising awareness about environmental sustainability and social justice issues. The Otesha crew combines theatre performance with interactive workshops to empower high school students to consider their life choices to ensure a positive future. Current consumption behaviours in Australia have far reaching consequences that are both unsustainable and inequitable. The negative impacts of these practices usually affect the most disempowered people in society, including young people who now face an uncertain future.

Otesha (Aust.) is seeking people with varying experiences, backgrounds and interests. While on tour, participants not only learn skills to become strong advocates for living sustainably, but also develop skills such as media communication, leadership, acting and communal living. The application deadline for tour participants is 15 August 2008. For information about applying, visit the Otesha (Aust.) website.

Drugs in your drinking water?

Consumers should not be drinking water from local wastewater treatment plants, according to La Trobe environmental chemist, Dr Michael Angove until compounds known as EDCs — endocrine disrupting chemicals — are removed.

Unless special methods are used by authorities to remove these potentially harmful chemicals, they pass through wastewater treatment plants. Currently there are no EPA regulations on their removal nor standard tests for their detection.

The Holy Grail of traffic management

Traffic authorities in Australia and overseas are trialling a new vehicle detector system that identifies changes in the Earth's magnetic field at intersections to detect passing or stopped cars — an alternative to the wired inductive loop detectors now in place at most traffic lights. The new system then uses radio communication to transmit the data to roadside traffic controllers.

Ms Harshi Singh

Harshi Singh

Course of study:
Bachelor of Laws 2015
Bachelor of Business 2015

My name is Harshi Singh and I am a student ambassador at La Trobe. I am currently in my third year of a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Business degree. Upon finishing my degree I hope to work within the legal sector, preferably combining both my interests in law and business.

I enjoy being a student ambassador because I get to interact with and meet many different people, both within and outside the university. I enjoy helping others make some very important decisions about their future as I have been through the process and know how hard it can be to make such a critical decision.

My advice for future students is to consider what you are good at and what you really love doing and be open-minded about all your options. Talk to as many people as you can to gain different perspectives.

La Trobe University is great because of its relaxed and social environment. The people are very friendly and welcoming and your tutors and lecturers are always available to give you any help you may need – they go above and beyond to ensure you are comfortable and understand the material being taught.
