La Trobe University Art Museum
The La Trobe University Art collection was founded in 1966. Today the Art Collection comprises more than two thousand works of art many of which are exhibited on the metropolitan and regional campuses of La Trobe University.

Works of art are lent to state and regional public galleries for specific purposes. The Collection is also an important research facility for staff, students and the public.

Recently, Ms Rae Alexander - BA(OldHumanities) 1973, GradDipHum 1992 - made a sizeable donation to the Art Museum for the purchase of books and catalogues to assist staff and students in their research. The University is most grateful to Rae for her ongoing support.

If you would like to consider contributing to the Art Collection either through the Federal Government's Cultural Gifts Program or by way of a donation the Museum, we would welcome your inquiry. Please contact the Development Office on +61 3 9479 5199 or development@latrobe.edu.au for further information.

ON BEING AUSTRALIAN
Being Australian is a complex and passionate issue that cannot be reduced to twenty questions on a citizenship test, says La Trobe University social scientist Dr Anthony Moran. Dr Moran, co-director of Nations and Identities in La Trobe's recently re-named Thesis Eleven Centre for Cultural Sociology, has just completed an in-depth study of first and second generation immigrants that explores their feelings and ideas about being Australian.

WORDS FROM THE BORDER - A WEST PAPUAN TELLS HIS STORY
Autobiography is a political act, particularly when it comes from a freedom fighter and is the first by a West Papuan. Dr John Stuyfbergen, a tutor in lifewriting at La Trobe University, is helping George Dimara tell his story so that the rights for self-determination of his people are placed in the public arena. Born in Biak in West Papua, George Dimara joined the Indonesian Army at the age of 19. With some others he deserted after having been promoted to sergeant and joined the guerilla forces fighting in the jungle. When he finally sought asylum in Australia, he was imprisoned first in Brisbane, then in Baxter detention centre.

Ms Alisha Yonzon

Alisha Yonzon

Course of study:
Bachelor of Health Sciences 2014
Bachelor of International Development 2014

My name is Alisha and I am a student ambassador at La Trobe University. My career plan is to travel and work for NGO’s. Currently I am studying a Bachelor of Health Sciences/International Development.

I love being a student ambassador because it is a chance to meet new students. Also being a student ambassador means representing the university – I love giving back in a positive way.

My advice to future students is to go to as many Open Days as possible to get a feel of the universities. Go with your friends/family and really take it all in.

Future students should attend Open Day’s because it is a chance to throw as many questions to knowledgeable and experienced students and staff. To put aside any fears you may have about university.

In my opinion La Trobe University is great because it is by far the friendliest university. The campus is as great as the people. It’s fantastic how welcoming the students are. Around lunch time you’ll see people picnicking around the green areas, while ducks waddle about. Our campus is just so scenic and beautiful.
