The Greener Government Building Program (GGBP) is a program administered by the Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) which aims to reduce Government’s environmental impact while achieving operational savings.

At La Trobe University

GGBDTF funding for the program has been withdrawn for University sector, but La Trobe University is proceeding with the project via alternate sources of funding. The aim of the University in engaging with the GGBP program is to reduce the University’s environmental impact whilst engaging the students and staff through real time learning from the program. La Trobe University continues to receive support and guidance from DTF to advance the program and follows DTF-GGBP guidelines regarding program structure and documents.

The GGBP will use an Energy Performance Contract (EPC) to procure and implement energy and water efficiency projects, enabling La Trobe University to deliver its energy and water efficiency targets. An EPC is when a contractor contractually guarantees the payback of capital costs out of the operational savings (from energy and water improvements) over a 7 year period.

Detailed Facility Study (DFS)

Siemens are currently engaged to undertake a Detailed Facility Study (DFS), from September 2012, at the Melbourne, Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga and Shepparton campuses, investigating the feasibility of their proposed (1) energy and water efficiency measures by undertaking level-3 audits, and (2) Learning & Research opportunities in collaboration with academic and professional staff, and students. The Siemens DFS report is scheduled to be submitted by the March 2013.

Subject to securing of funds and following approval from University Council, the EPC is expected to be signed by July 2013.

Learning and Research Component DFS:

As part of the Greener Government Building Project (GGB) La Trobe is working with Siemens and its community to coordinate and design the delivery of a program of Learning and Research (L&R) initiatives.  These initiatives will utilise learning opportunities that arise from the GGB works and provide staff, students, institutes and faculties the ability to develop sustainability related curriculum, encourage student involvement in sustainability related projects, research and increased engagement in broader sustainable living programs on campus. An Expression of Interest process will be conducted to select eligible projects.

Latest GGBP updates

Call Expression of Interest:

Expressions of Interest are welcome from all members of the University.  Funding available is projected to be approx. $1.3 million dollars over the life of the project and will be subject to evaluation criteria as published by the GGB Learning and Research Working Group.

With submissions due on February 15, 2013, the GGB Learning and Research group has organised an information session open to all staff and students to outline how to get your sustainability project considered.

Please contact Stephen Muir with any enquiries.

Course of study:
Bachelor of Human Nutrition 2014

Hi my name is Caitlin and I am a student ambassador at La Trobe University. I currently study a Bachelor of Human Nutrition and I hope to work in nutrition research.

I enjoy being a student ambassador because I love meeting everyone and working alongside all the other great student ambassadors. Being a student ambassador is also a great way to give back to the La Trobe community and to get involved with likeminded people.

I love talking to people and motivating others to pursue a career in nutrition and the health industry.

My advice for future students is to talk to as many uni students as possible about what path they took for the course they do. Make sure you attend Open Day as well, and ask as many questions as you can and need.

La Trobe Uni is a great place to study Health Sciences. Working in the labs is great and you meet so many people that share your interests. The lecturers are always happy to help you get to where you want to be and the ducks on campus are a cute bonus.

It is definitely worth attending Open Day’s. It’s a fun day that gets you excited about a big decision in your life. Ask every question you can to help you make the right choice for you. Everyone at La Trobe is unique and their pathways to get here are as well.
