Introduction to the Series

Adrian Jones and Richard Broome - Series Editors

This series of booklets is produced by the History Program of La Trobe University, in consultation with curriculum advisers and practising teachers. All the booklets have been prepared by specialists from La Trobe, and tested by the History Teachers ' Association of Victoria to ensure their practical usefulness in the classroom.

The series aims to provide a range of interesting and stimulating materials to meet the changing needs of teachers and students of History. We hope that these materials will encourage students to develop the skills used by historians and to find enjoyment in the study of History.

Each booklet focuses on a particular topic, but each is also designed to encourage an awareness of larger themes such as class, gender, ideology, race and power. The emphasis is on developing an ability to understand and to analyse a broad range of documentary extracts, both visual and written. The series also aims to prepare students to fulfil specific assessment tasks, including analytical exercises and research essays. Materials which could form the basis of these tasks are provided, and sources of additional materials are suggested.

The topics have been selected in accordance with units of the Victorian History curriculum for years 11 and 12.

The editors wish to thank the executive of the History Teachers' Association of Victoria for their support; members of the History Program at La Trobe; and in particular, Trish Austin, who administers this series.

The editors welcome comments from teachers and students on these materials.
