School of Historical and European StudiesLatin American Studies ProgramThe Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS), founded in 1976, is Australia’s first and Victoria’s only academic centre dedicated to Latin America. It coordinates Latin American teaching and research at La Trobe University. La Trobe is the only university in Victoria where students can undertake a program of subjects dealing with Latin America. The two Latin America specialists in History play an active role in the ILAS and the Institute runs Short Course/Summer and Winter Schools and promotes research and postgraduate work on Latin America. The History offerings cover both the colonial and pre-conquest (1500-1800) and the national (1800-2000s) periods of Latin American history as well as popular culture and environmental history. In addition to fortnightly seminars, ILAS organises conferences and sponsors visits by Latin Americanists from the Spanish, Portuguese and English speaking worlds. Members of ILAS publish regularly and present their research to national and international conferences. Other activities include Advisory Board membership of JILAR - Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research, the journal of the Association of Iberian and Latin American Studies of Australasia (AILASA). The Director of ILAS is Dr Ralph Newmark. For more information about ILAS - visit the website. Bachelor of ArtsSecond and third year subjects
