School of Historical and European StudiesHistory ProgramHistory has been taught at La Trobe since the University's beginnings in 1967. The staff have a strong commitment to teaching and over the years have gained a reputation for innovation and dedication. For instance La Trobe pioneered the first History and Film subjects. Its staff developed a new interdisciplinary method of historical research now known world-wide as the approach of 'The Melbourne School'. Research The History Program has a number of specialities, including Australian History, Women's Studies and Gender Relations, Early and Modern European History, North American and Latin American History, Religious Studies, African History and Sports History.
