This unit engages the senses by using music and food to explore
the political, economic, social and cultural histories of Argentina, Brazil and Cuba.
Hollywood Goes South of the Border: Image and Representation of Latin America in U.S. Films Dr Graham Holton
U.S. films have portrayed Latin American and Caribbean peoples in derogatory ways since the silent era.
This unit analyses the image and representation of the 'other' in weekly workshops,
using adventure, science fiction and musical films.
Liberdade: The History of East Timor and the Portuguese Speaking World Through Music - Dr Ralph Newmark
The new nation of East Timor is highly relevant to Australia. As popular culture is a powerful tool for historical analysis, this unit uses music to explore political, economic, social and cultural themes in the history of East Timor as well as other former Portuguese colonies such as Brazil, Cape Verde Islands, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Mozambique, Goa, Ceylon, Indonesia, Malacca, and Macau.
