ANG1AMC - Ancient Mediterranean Culture

Coordinator Dr Despina Michael
Semester 2
Class size 107
Questionnaire responses:This subject was not surveyed in 2008 whilst the University was reviewing its student evaluation procedures.

Coordinator’s comments: Subject guide, weekly lecture schedule, powerpoint lecture notes, assessment tasks, links to student resources (library, Turnitin, information on how to write better essays) were on LMS.  The LMS also provided a student discussion link and audio recording of lectures.

ANG1BEA - Ancient Greek Beginners A

Coordinator Dr Thanasis Spilias
Semester 1
Class size 21 (17 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.1

Best aspects: Clarity of aims, quality of feedback and individual attention from subject lecturer, suitability of assessment, great classroom environment and teaching style.

Needs improvement: Greater consultation hours from subject lecturer, more teamwork/group focussed work and greater emphasis on culture (to balance with language teaching). Time allocation to be changed, would prefer two sessions on two separate days instead of one session of the three hours duration.

ANG1BEB - Ancient Greek Beginners B

Coordinator Dr Thanasis Spilias
Semester 2
Class size 16
Questionnaire responses:This subject was not surveyed in 2008 whilst the University was reviewing its student evaluation procedures.

Coordinator’s comments:none provided.

ARC1DAR - Discovering Archaeology

Coordinator Dr Susan Lawrence
Semester 1
Class Size
176 (93 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 3.9

Best aspects: Favourite part of the subject was the tutorials with hands-on work with artefacts.  Videos received mixed reviews, some comments praised them, others thought they were dated (which does not in itself mean they are inappropriate – but may require greater introduction and discussion to make meaningful).

Needs improvement: Students are now accustomed to having lecture notes on LMS and complained that this was not done in this subject, although they were available for loan on CD Rom.  A version of the lecture notes will be placed on LMS next year.

Top

ARC1DOH - Dawn of Humanity

Coordinator Dr Nicola Stern
Semester 2
Class size 140
Questionnaire responses:This subject was not surveyed in 2008 whilst the University was reviewing its student evaluation procedures.

Coordinator’s comments:The profile of results reflects the interest of students and the general success of the subject.  The proposed changes for the next time the subject is taught is that there will be a reduction of films and possible replacement with additional lecture and interactive content.

ARC2/3AME - Archaeology of the Middle East

Coordinator Dr Phillip Edwards
Semester 1
Class Size
36/14 (38 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 3.8

Best aspects: Lectures and tutorials well prepared and presented.

Needs improvement: Subject to be placed on LMS, students to be advised of this at first lecture.

ARC2/3AMW - Archaeology of the Modern World

Coordinator Dr Susan Lawrence
Semester 1
Class Size
25/21 (32 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.2

Best aspects: Favourite part of the subject was the workshop component with hands-on work on artefacts.

Needs improvement:
Students would like more time in the workshops, but given restrictions on contact hours this is not feasible. Several students commented on the disconnect between lectures and workshops, a situation that is unavoidable given the practical nature of material presented in the workshops.  Many felt that lecture material should be assessed, and given attendance figures.  If this subject is to be taught again lecture content in material to be reviewed by students in their weekly journal assignment would be included.

ARC2/3ANT- Ancient Technologies

Coordinator Dr Nicola Stern
Semester 2
Class size 26/10
Questionnaire responses:This subject was not surveyed in 2008 whilst the University was reviewing its student evaluation procedures.

Coordinator’s comments:Students who failed this subject did so because they did not complete all the assessment tasks.  However, significant modifications have been set up to address concerns of students who found the subject ‘too challenging’.

ARC2/3MAN - Managing Archaeology

Coordinator Dr Sam Spiers
Semester 1
Class Size:
30/19 (27 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.7

Best aspects: Weekly reading journals, fieldtrip to Plenty Gorge and guest lecturers.

Needs improvement: Some students didn’t like the organisation of group work for the Heritage Management Plan, where some groups may have been disadvantaged with regard to the type of site allocated or the varied abilities of the other students in their group.

ARC2/3PAL - Palaeolithic Archaeology

Coordinator Dr Nicola Stern
Semester 1
Class Size
28/13 (29 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.4

Best aspects: The quality of lectures, the effort to make the material interesting, the clarity of the aims, the appropriateness of the assessment, the manageable workload and the way things are explained.

Needs improvement: Explicit discussion is needed about the problem solving skills and analytical skills built into this unit, as well as discussion about the role of the unit co-ordinator (to facilitate learning) vs the responsibilities of the students (to do the learning).

ARC2/3RFC - Rise and Fall of Civilisations

Class Size
11 (11 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 3.7

Best aspects: Developed teamwork, analytical skills and problem solving.

Needs improvement: Some aspects of the fieldwork were challenging for students since honours students are expected to be self motivated and to some extent independent thinkers.  Some students found the unformatted outdoor structure difficult to come to terms with.

ARH1ARW - Art from Renaissance to Impressionism

Coordinator Dr Lisa Beaven
Semester 1
Class Size 63 (30 responses)
Questionnaire responses Semester 1: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.4

Best aspect: Students were strongly of the opinion that lectures were well prepared and presented in this unit with the mean for this question 4.7. They also felt that tutorials, workshops and seminars were well prepared and organised, with the mean for this 4.4.  The fact that many students wrote so much in the category of ‘what were the best aspects of the subject’ was very encouraging.

Needs improvement: One of the frustrating things about the subject is that I would have liked to have had far more excursions to the National Gallery of Victoria, but La Trobe’s geographical location makes this very difficult. This may be built into the curriculum for 2009.  Another issue was that students wanted the readings in hard copy and additional readings on LMS with links to JSTOR.

ARH1ARW - Art from Renaissance to van Gogh

EST1GAB - Ancient Greece and the Balkans

Coordinator Dr Despina Michael
Semester 1
Class Size
62 (12 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 3.8

Best aspects: Most positive comments were about organisation of lectures and overall unit, clear teaching methodology, variety of themes covered, good use of support AV materials, and pleased with option of essay or final exam.

Needs improvement: A number of concerns were expressed about the volume of course content, trying to keep up with the workload and not having sufficient time to absorb the readings.  Also comments were made about there not being sufficient resources to go around (especially library books).  One comment was about the excessive size of the tutorials.  For 2009 it will be considered cutting back on the volume of readings in the Unit Handbook.  As a Semester 1 unit, the needs of the students are different to when it was being delivered as a Semester 2 unit.

EST1WEA - Windows on Contemporary Europe:Cultures in transformation

Coordinator Mr Tony Pagliaro

Coordinator Dr Despina Michael
Semester 1
Class Size
224/14 (8 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 3.8

Best aspects: Most positive comments were about the interesting content, helpful tutorials where wide discussion was encouraged, the impact of deeper research, increasing student confidence due to deeper understanding and widening of analytical capabilities.

Needs improvement: Some concern about the volume of reading, clearer lecture points, preference for whole class discussions rather than small group work.  One student said the unit did not need any improvement.

Class Size
16/12 (15 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

211 (13 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.6

Best aspect: Lecturer and development of academic skills.

HIS1DEV - Globalisation: the Rise of the Modern World

Coordinator Dr Robbie Robertson
Semester 2
Class Size
56(BE), 211(BU), 13(SH)
Questionnaire responses:This subject was not surveyed in 2008 whilst the University was reviewing its student evaluation procedures.

Coordinator's comments : The subject focus was tightened in response to previous student feedback.

HIS1MEA - Modern Europe A: From Monarchies to Nations, 1760-1890

Coordinators Dr Adrian Jones
Semester 1
Class Size
194(BU),68(BE),19(SH) responses 105(BU),66(BE),10(SH)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 3.7 BU/3.4 BE/3.2 SH

Best aspect: Enhancing students’ analytic and writing skills by devising interesting tasks with clear aims and comprehensive feedback.  Well-prepared and enthusiastic staff.

Needs improvement:
Most students would prefer to study fewer themes.  Regional students would prefer live lectures.  A minority of students (especially in regional campuses) expect lectures to deliver a firm and limited set of points to learn via lists in a Powerpoint.  AV and video-conferencing problems hampered some regional student’s engagement with the subject.  Consideration will be given to reducing the spread of topics and readings.

HIS1MEB - Modern Europe B:The Twentieth Century

Coordinator Dr Adrian Jones
Semester 2
Class Size
34(AW), 218()BU), 25(MI)
Questionnaire responses:This subject was not surveyed in 2008 whilst the University was reviewing its student evaluation procedures.

Coordinator's comments:Student feedback was positive and Dr Jones received strong responses for his lecturing.

HIS1MLH - Myth, Legend and History

Coordinator Dr Diane Kirkby
Semester 1
Class Size
242(BU),29(MI) responses 93(BU)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 3.9

Best aspect: Exploring popular ‘myths’ in detail and their basis in historical fact’: lectures on Ancient world.

Needs improvement:
More explanation of the myths. Students always divide between those who love and want more Ancient world and those who want to know more about King Arthur.  We had some extra problems this year coming from the preparation of new lectures and connecting with the different parts of the subject.

HIS2/3AAW - Australians at War: Gendered perspectives

Coordinator Dr Katie Holmes
Semester 2
Class Size
8/6(BE), 12/5(SH)
Questionnaire responses:This subject was not surveyed in 2008 whilst the University was reviewing its student evaluation procedures.

Coordinator's comments:The subject will continue to be revised in light of what feedback is available and other pedagogical considerations.

HIS2/3AGR - Antiquity, Gender and Religion

Coordinator Dr Anne Gardner
Semester 1
Class Size
29/37 (57 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.3

Best aspect: The highest scores in the questionnaire were awarded for the lecturer and tutor’s Dr Anne Gardner work in making the unit interesting and her ability to explain things.  Students thought that the aims of the unit were made clear at the start, that appropriate forms of assessment were used ant the lectures were well prepared.  Most students claimed that the unit enhanced their analytical skills and that tutorials were well prepared and organised and the workload manageable.  There was a perception that Dr Gardner put a lot of time into commenting on work and giving helpful feedback, as well as giving students enough time to learn.  Written communication skills were thought to have been developed.

Needs improvement:
The weakest aspect of the unit was that it did not develop, to a sufficient degree, student ability to work as a team member.  Some small group work in tutorials next time the unit is offered should remedy this.  The latter conclusion is based not only on the results of the Quality Assurance Questionnaire, but also on the very high level of student attendance in lectures as well as tutorials.

HIS2/3ALS - Australian Labour and the State

Coordinator Dr Charles Fahey
Semester 2
Class Size

Questionnaire responses:This subject was not surveyed in 2008 whilst the University was reviewing its student evaluation procedures.

Coordinator's comments:The subject will continue to be revised in light of what feedback is available and other pedagogical considerations.

HIS2/3CPP - Charting the Colonial Pacific

Coordinator Dr Tracey Banivanua-Mar
Semester 1
Class Size
29/37 (57 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.3

Best aspect: Feedback was that people found the subject matter and course content stimulating and thought-provoking.  They found the conceptual material challenging and enjoyed the blend of primary documents and conceptual material.

Needs improvement:
One student felt the class finished too late, a couple found the weekly reading to be occasionally too much and had trouble with LMS, and a couple regretted that we didn’t have time to include more breadth and dept (e.g. the histories of Samoa, Tonga and other islands).  For next year, the lecture and tutorials have been moved to an earlier time and will review the weekly reading material.  Hopefully next year LMS will be more stable as a source of lecture outlines for those who may have missed crucial lectures (covering breadth and depth in the region).  Finally teaching aids such as chronologies of Pacific and Australia will be made available on LMS to support the conceptual and comparative focus of the subject.

HIS2/3CWU - Civil War to Civil Rights in the USA

Coordinator Dr Glenn Moore
Semester 1
Class Size
35/43 (35 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.6

Best aspect: Great lecturers.

Needs improvement:
Tutorials were overcrowded.

HIS2/3EUT - Europe Transformed

Coordinator Dr Adrian Jones
Semester 1
Class Size
35/43 (35 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.4

Best aspect: Staff enthusiasm evident in simulating and well-received tutorials and lectures, and the setting of assessment tasks that were judged to be stimulating and creative which also received comprehensive feedback.

Needs improvement:
Better linking some lecture themes to tutorial themes.  In 2009 the subject will be re-named European Cultural History, to better reflect its agenda.  The timing and linking of lectures will be re-assessed.

HIS2/3EUU - The European Union

Coordinators Dr Stefan Auer
Semester 1
Class Size
42/29(BU),15/12(AW),11/8(BE),18/4(MI), responses 49(BU), 22(AW), 15(MI)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.2 BU/4.1 AW/4.3 MI

Best aspect: Many students commented positively on broad range of perspectives; unusual format of lectures that took form of interviews with visitors, experts and EU practitioners; the engaging delivery of lectures; overall structure of the subject.

Needs improvement:
A number of students had difficulties with the LMS based quiz either because of some technical issues, or because of the actual content.  Students without a broadband connection also experienced difficulties with accessing the material on LMS.  Next year, I will endeavour to simplify LMS.

Coordinator Dr Rachael Stanfield
Semester 2
Class Size
21/7(BE)
Questionnaire responses:This subject was not surveyed in 2008 whilst the University was reviewing its student evaluation procedures.

Best aspects: The workshops and lecturer.

Needs improvement:
Students noted reading, assessment and workload.  Some noted that blog was boring.

Coordinator’s comments:  The lecturer was pleased with the response to the subject.

HIS2/3JFF - Jesus: Fact or Fiction?

Coordinator Dr Anne Gardner
Semester 1

Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4

Best aspect: Lectures and tutorials were praised for being well prepared and organised.  The staff, Dr Anne Gardner and Dr Adrian Coleridge were, considered to have worked hard to make the unit interesting and to have been extremely good at explaining things.  Further the unit was praised for enhancing the analytical skills of the participants and for having an appropriate workload and appropriate forms of assessment.

Needs improvement:
The lowest score related to the development of the skill of participants to work as team members.  Small group work in tutorials should improve this in the future.  While the level of student satisfaction was high, it was not quite as high in 2008 as it had been in the past. Lack of reading resources was a major difficulty.  The bookshop ordered only about a tenth of the required textbooks and secondary books which were vital for particular essay topics went missing from the Library.  Steps were taken by the coordinator to counteract these difficulties but it was not always possible to compensate entirely.

ARH/HIS2/3MAM - Making America

Coordinator Dr Diane Kirkby
Semester 1
Class Size
17/29(BU), 4/6(AW), responses 39 (BU)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 3.9

Best aspects: Very interesting content and images, learning about art; the lecturer’s knowledge and enthusiasm; tutorial discussions.

Needs improvement: This is an interdisciplinary unit and it’s impossible to know from brief comments which is wanted – more art or more history.  The unit makes students work together.  Similarly some students responded very favourably to the small group discussion format of the tutorials, others found it stressful.

HIS2/3MMH - Memory, Myth and History

Coordinator Dr Marina Larsson
Semester 1
Class Size
22/20
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.4

Best aspects:

  • Well structured, inclusive and runs at a good pace.  This subject provides a solid foundation for studying any form of History. It encourages students to view issues from a variety of angles and theories.  One of the most satisfying and interesting, stimulating units I have done.
  • Ability to look at History in a theoretical way.
  • I was able to learn more about Australian History and the theory behind it.
  • Making you reconsider social norms/other sides and perspectives of History.
  • Perspectives it presented on understanding History.
  • Lectures were excellent.  Clear, placed in context, followed through, variety of presentation.
  • Engaging delivery by Marina, group tutorial work.
  • Interesting material – reading and lectures.
  • The tutorials were by far the most friendly and structured.
  • Tutorials provided a good platform for discussion. The content had some very meaty substance.
  • Helped my analytical skills and to give my own feedback.
  • Variety of issues taught.
  • Tutorials were very interactive and it was easy to give an opinion.
  • Enthusiasm of tutor for material shows.
  • Marina’s enthusiasm.
  • Organising ideas and thinking in an academic way.
  • Very enjoyable and easily understandable lectures.
  • Tour of the Shrine of Remembrance.
  • Excursions.  This added an extra dimension.
  • Variety of assessment tasks.  Lectures were straightforward.

Needs improvement:

  • Some of the guest lecturers were boring.
  • Need more preparation for the theoretical essay.
  • 2 hour lectures too long.
  • Tutorial sizes too big.
  • Tutorials too short.
  • Basic Australian History dates need to be outlined for international students.
  • I don’t think tutor marked fair, different standards to other lecturers. Feeling work wasn’t respected made me care less about work.
  • Aspects of this unit were unconnected – tie everything together.
Overwhelmingly the comments are positive.
HIS2/3MMI - The Making of Modern Italy

Coordinator Mr Tony Pagliaro
Semester 1
Class Size
14/20 (responses 10)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 3.3

Best aspect:

  • A fine selection of readings with extended bibliography.
  • Was made interesting though I did struggle to comprehend the material.
  • Tutorial discussions.
  • The assessment was fair and well spread out and handed back quickly with some good comments.
  • Interesting area of study. Plenty of resources.  I learned a lot in an area I’d not known anything about.

Needs improvement:

  • I found the unit confusing at first because I wasn’t sure where it was heading.  I think the literature elements were not really relevant in the early stage – it made it confusing and distracted from the main themes.
  • Some of the readings made little sense.
  • I found the aims of this subject extremely hard to follow, even at the end of the teaching period I am unsure of these aims.  I was disappointed in the end.
The comments both positive and negative suggest that students were engaged in an appropriate manner with the subject, experienced a manageable degree of challenge and profited from it. Clarification of aims seems desirable and will be pursued.  The difficulties encountered reflect some of the issues involved in contextualising the documents employed.  I think it could be a good idea to postpone the readings of literary documents to a later stage in the semester when students have a grasp of the period and are probably better able to handle its self-analysis.  Most students did not do tutorial readings in advance which left the weight of discussion to a minority.

HIS2/3RAR - Riots and Rebelllions

Coordinator Dr Jennifer Ridden and Dr Yolande Collins
Semester 2
Class Size
12/13(BE), 21/31(BU)
Questionnaire responses:All things considered I was satisfied with this subject (3.7 (BE, 4.5 (BU))

Best aspects:
Students were enthusiastic and engaged in the subject and with the subject matter and some thought it the best subject they had done at La Trobe.  Student-led activities in tutorials including team presentations, role-playing etc.  The lecturer’s clear explanations and structured lectures, her enthusiasm, openness to student opinion and her innovative teaching methods were identified as key elements, as were her use of LMS; and film and pictorial sources in lectures.  The opportunity to explore varied experiences within and beyond the UK (including Scotland) and among a range of different socio-economic groups was seen as beneficial.  Students believed the subject helped them develop rich conceptual and analytical understandings, which enhanced their other studies and their lives beyond university.

Needs improvement:
Reduction in the amount of material covered and the weekly reading without ‘dumbing’ down the historical debates.  This will allow the introduction of new concepts and material at a slower pace.  Simplification of online quizzes.

Coordinator’s comments:
The student feedback was excellent in this subject, especially since this was the first time it was offered – and it was received well in Bundoora and Bendigo.  The Dean advised me that the scores were at the very top of the range obtained by subjects from across the Faculty.  The focus on student-centred learning, and the development of the nexus between lectures, tutorials and private study worked well.  Teamwork between Yolande Collins and Jennifer Ridden was particularly rewarding, and the DVD-filming and methods of using DVDs in Bendigo was good.  Methods of catering for the breadth of student needs within the Bendigo group and between Bendigo and Bundoora groups as a whole needs further consideration.  The third-year cohort was particularly gifted, which was reflected in a higher-than-usual number of As.

Coordinator Dr Isabel Moutinho
Semester 1

14/41 (47 responses)
Questionnaire responses: (maximum possible rating is 5)

  • All things considered, I am satisfied with this unit – mean 4.2

Best aspect: The quality of the teaching, the enthusiasm of the teaching staff, and their being so approachable, professional and friendly. The teaching staff’s interest in the students’ progress.  The culture seminars, the discussions and group work in these.  The videos and reading materials.  The unit’s structure (culture and grammar, with the grammar tutorial immediately after gramma, to facilitate learning and practice).

Needs improvement:
Culture seminars to concentrate on fewer topics. Technological problems in the culture seminars.  Smaller class sizes and more contact hours per week.  The format of the listening tests.  More time for grammar, too rushed.  More grammar exercises to be provided.  Grammar to be better explained.  More talking, less grammar. More writing practice.  LMS access for Melbourne Uni students

Next years culture content will be different again (it changes according to the textbook).  Next year there will definitely be more grammar exercises.
