We offer a number of bridging courses.
Physiology and Anatomy
This online course gives you the foundation for further studies in nursing and health science. Study and understand the function and structure of the human body.
On completion, you will be able to:
- Describe the roles of the organ systems, explain how these contribute to the maintenance of homeostasis and describe physiological responses for survival.
- Describe the relationship between structure and function of cells, tissues and organs.
- Appreciate individual physiological and anatomical differences including lifespan differences.
- Interpret and apply data that describes normal physiological functioning.
- Predict the consequences of certain diseases or injury on normal function.
- Communicate in an informed way with colleagues and clients.
Health Information Management for Graduate Entry Masters Student
All successful applicants for the Graduate-entry Master of Health Information Management who have not completed a degree in medicine, biomedical science, science (with studies in anatomy and physiology), dentistry, nursing, allied health, or health sciences (containing anatomy and physiology subjects) should undertake the bridging course in Anatomy & Physiology.
The Department of Health Information Management also provides a Bridging Course in introductory Health Classification & Clinical Coding for all incoming Master of Health Information Management students. Human Communication Sciences for Graduate Entry Masters Student
This course is only available for students who have been offered a place in the Graduate Entry Master of Speech Pathology. This course is for students who have not completed previous studies in human bioscience (anatomy and physiology) and linguistics (phonetics and grammar) to develop the foundation knowledge that serves as a basis for studies in speech pathology.
In this 4 week intensive course, students will begin to acquire the foundation knowledge about normal communication and swallowing to serve as a basis for their future studies in speech pathology.The bridging course commences on Tuesday 29th January and finishes on Friday 22nd February 2013. The bridging course costs $360.00 and students can register online.

Orthoptics for Graduate Entry Masters Student
Students without a degree in vision science, health sciences or biological sciences will be required to complete the bridging course in physiology and anatomy and/or orthoptics.
Students without a background in anatomy and physiology will need to complete the School of Human Biosciences Physiology and Anatomy Bridging Course. Students are advised to undertake this prior to the Orthoptics Bridging Course.
Students without a background in vision science (or vision science graduates who have not completed relevant subjects) will need to complete the Orthoptics Bridging Course. The Orthoptics Bridging Course will run from Wednesday 30th January to Friday 22nd February 2013. The course is Online with 6 face to face classes in final 2 weeks (timetable will be supplied to students at enrolment).
The Physiology and Anatomy and Orthoptics bridging courses cost $330 and $450 respectively.

Physiotherapy for Graduate Entry Masters student
The Master of Physiotherapy Practice degree commences with a Preparatory Program in the summer semester of 2013 (W04-W09, Monday 21st January – 22nd February 2013). Direct contact sessions are scheduled on Wednesday through to Friday of the 5- week program. In addition, students are expected to complete a significant quantity of self directed study.
It is strongly recommended that all GEM physiotherapy students attend and successfully complete this program as it aims to help students develop foundation knowledge and skills which will serve as a basis for their physiotherapy studies. Students who feel they already have the outlined knowledge and skills may apply for an exemption for those aspects.
Content will include an introduction to:
- evidence based practice in physiotherapy, including literature searching and appraisal
- observational analysis of movement, with a particular focus on gait
- soft tissue injury management within a physiotherapy context
- select physiotherapy practical skills, including palpation, active, passive and accessory movements, goniometry
- diagnostic reasoning skills within a physiotherapy context
- electrotherapy modalities relevant to physiotherapy practice
- student assessment of physiotherapy practical skills
The program is being held at the Melbourne (Bundoora campus) and is only open to students who are successful with their application for entry and offered a place for 2013.

Podiatry for Graduate Entry Masters student
This course is only available for students who have been offered a place in the Graduate Entry Master of Podiatric Practice. This compulsory 2 week program will focus on providing you with essential pre-clinical podiatry skills prior to the commencement of the Master of Podiatric program.
The cost of this program will be $1500. It is anticipated that this course will run in late February.

Prosthetics and Orthotics for Graduate Entry Masters Student
Students without a background in anatomy and physiology will need to complete the School of Human Biosciences Physiology and Anatomy Bridging Course. Students are advised to undertake this prior to the Prosthetics and Orthotics Bridging Course.
Students who do not have a background in prosthetics and orthotics fabrication skills, must complete a bridging course in fabrication skills and occupational health and safety.
The Prosthetics and Orthotics Bridging Course will run during February 2013. Students will be required to purchase a Prosthetics and Orthotics Toolkit which will be used during the Bridging Course. The toolkit will also be used throughout the remainder of their studies and can be purchased for approximately $650.
The Physiology and Anatomy and Prosthetics and Orthotics bridging courses cost $330 and $900 respectively and students can register online.
The Prosthetics and Orthotics bridging course will run from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd February, 2013, 9.00am - 5.00pm daily in the Health Sciences Clinic Building.
