Additional Information for VTAC and UAC applicants

Applicants wishing to apply for admission into Health Sciences courses via VTAC or UAC may be required to submit discipline specific Supplementary Information forms or be aware of additional information such as Infection Control or Bridging studies or register for a Selection Examination.

Applicants required to submit additional information must note that the request for additional information is a mandatory part of the application and selection and as such, applicants that do not include this information, will not be considered for admission into the course.

Applicants wishing to be considered for entry into one of the Graduate Entry Masters courses (listed below), are strongly encouraged to submit an application (including supporting documentation) to VTAC by the timely closing date of 28 September. Some Graduate Entry Masters courses will not participate beyond Early Round Selection and as such, these courses will cease accepting applications beyond 28 September (please refer to the course entry below for detailed information). The remainder of the Graduate Entry Masters courses will complete majority of selection during the Early Round selection period and as such, applications received past this date will not be considered for an early round offer and may miss out on an offer if places are filled post Early Round Enrolments.

Below is a list of courses for which additional information or steps are required:

Master of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics

All applicants wishing to be considered for admission into this course must download and complete the Supplementary Information Form - Clinical Prosthetics & Orthotics. Applicants must outline relevant work experience (eg: health professional paid work, health or fitness industry paid work, other relevant paid work or volunteer work) and submit the completed form, along with subject outlines directly to La Trobe University.

Students without a background in anatomy and physiology will be required to undertake Bridging Studies in Anatomy & Physiology.

Students who do not have a background in prosthetics and orthotics fabrication skills, must complete Bridging Studies in fabrication skills and occupational health and safety.

Students will be required to purchase a Prosthetics and Orthotics Toolkit which will be used during the Bridging Course. The toolkit will also be used throughout the remainder of their studies.

Master of Dietetic Practice

All applicants who wish to be considered for admission into this course must download  and complete the Supplementary Information Form – Master of Dietetic Practice and submit it along with  subject outlines for completed studies in prerequisite subjects per address  details on the Supplementary Information Form.   All applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Personal History online.  Interview (some applicants only): Details will be provided by telephone or mail  to the applicants required to attend an interview, to be held in  November/December.
Some students may be required to complete bridging  modules in February/March 2013, depending on previously completed studies.  Additional information about the bridging  modules will be provided to successful applicants in their enrolment  packs.  There may be a cost involved.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in a health or science related area normally awarded no more than 5 years ago (or subsequent  postgraduate study and/or relevant work experience). Applicants must have obtained a grade point average of at 5.0 (credit average or above) in their most recently completed university undergraduate degree to be eligible to apply. Subject pre-requisites in the Bachelor's degree or post-graduate course, or taken as single subject (non-award) studies are:

  1. Two full semester subjects of human physiology at second year tertiary level or higher.
  2. Two full semester subjects of biochemistry at second year tertiary level or higher.
  3. Two full semester subjects of human nutrition science at any tertiary level.  

Note:  Each subject must be equivalent to at least 0.125 Effective Full-time Study Unit (EFTSU). Prerequisite subjects specified to be at 2nd year tertiary level or higher must be at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 6 or higher or equivalent. If an applicant is not sure of the EFTSU or AQF level of any of their pre-requisite subjects; it is their  responsibility to check with the institution where they undertook that subject, and to provide that evidence with their application. Sources of this information may include the course handbook entry, subject outline or letter or email from the institution. Previous studies at LaTrobe University are exempt  from providing documentary evidence of the AQF level.

Biochemistry studies must have included fundamentals of: DNA  structure and function; molecular biology; protein structure and function (including enzyme action); cellular metabolism of energy and nutrients and its regulation; lipids and membranes; cell biology.

Physiology studies must have included systemic physiology and or pathophysiology including homeostatic mechanisms and at least  six of the following eight systems: body defences (immune system); gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular and nervous systems.

Nutrition science must have included macronutrients and micronutrients (food sources, metabolism, storage and function); principles of energy balance; nutrient analysis of foods and aetiology of nutrition – related diseases.

Master of Health Information Management

All successful applicants for the Graduate-entry Master of Health Information Management who have not completed a degree in medicine, biomedical science, science (with studies in anatomy and physiology), dentistry, nursing, allied health, or health sciences (containing anatomy and physiology subjects) may be required to undertake Bridging Studies in Anatomy & Physiology. Applicants must review the Bridging Studies – Health Information Management link to determine if they may be required to undertake these studies.

All students are required to undertake the three-day health classification/clinical coding bridging course in late February. The Department of Health Information Management also provides online bridging materials supported by a small number of tutorials for successful applicants at the start of the course in basic health information science and health informatics. The tutorials are timetabled in addition to the core subjects.

Bachelor of Health Sciences in Dentistry/Master of Dentistry

All applicants must review and be aware of the Guidelines on Infection Control when applying for admission into this course.

This document requires applicants and students to be aware of their blood borne virus (BBV) status. Students with a BBV will not be able to undertake the course, in line with the requirements of the Dental Board of Australia.

Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Occupational Therapy Practice

All applicants must review and be aware of the Inherent Requirements for Entry Level Occupational Therapy when applying for admission into this course.

Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Paramedic Practice

All applicants must review and be aware of the Course & Industry Requirements (including Medical & Physical Capacity Checks Information) when applying for admission into this course.

Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Physiotherapy Practice

All applicants are advised to review the Frequently  Asked Questions - Health Sciences/Physiotherapy when applying for admission  into this course.

Please note: All Applicants must satisfy the Department of Physiotherapy Year 12 pre-requisites  requirements. Applicants who have completed a subject equivalent to a Unit 3  & 4 in VCE in any of the pre-requisite subjects whilst doing a university  degree, must complete a pre-requisite waiver form and return it per  instructions on the form by no later than 16 November 2012.  Applicants must also supply a copy of a  subject syllabus and a certified copy of relevant results at time of submission  of this form. The outcome of this request will be advised via email/mail.

Bachelor of Nursing (Division 2 Conversion)

Melbourne campus applicants must register for and complete a Selection Examination set by La Trobe University in order to be considered for admission into this course at the Melbourne campus. The examination will be held on Sunday 14 October 2012 with a repeat examination held on Sunday 9 December 2012 for late applicants. Please note that this is not relevant to applicants of Regional locations, only those who wish to be considered for admission at the Melbourne campus. Master of Occupational Therapy Practice

All applicants wishing to be considered for admission into this course must review the Supplementary Information Form - Occupational Therapy Practice and follow detailed instructions. Information requested as part of the Supplementary Information form should be submitted directly to the Seletction Officer, per instructions on the form.

Applicants must also review the Bridging Studies - Occupational Therapy Practice link to determine if they are required to undertake the Bridging studies if successful with an offer.

Due to an early commencement date and bridging course requirements, La Trobe will only participate in early round selection. VTAC applications submitted after the timely application closing date of 28 September will not be considered.

Bachelor of Oral Health Science

All applicants must review and be aware of the Guidelines on Infection Control when applying for admission into this course.

This document requires applicants and students to be aware of their blood borne virus (BBV) status. Students with a BBV will not be able to undertake the course, in line with the requirements of the Dental Board of Australia.

Master of Orthoptics

Depending on the content of the previous degree, Successful applicants may be required to complete bridging studies to be held late January 2013 – late February 2013. Applicants wishing to determine the need to undertake these bridging studies must refer to Bridging Studies - Orthoptics. Due to bridging course requirements, La Trobe will primarily participate in early round selection. VTAC applications submitted after early round selection has been conducted will only be considered if the applicant is eligible for an exemption from the bridging program.

Master of Podiatric Practice

All applicants wishing to be considered for  admission into this course must download and complete the Supplementary  Information Form - Podiatric Practice and submit it along with subject  outlines directly to the Selection Officer at La Trobe University and per  instructions on the form.
