Course Transfer Information

For students planning to apply for transfer into courses in the Faculty of Health Sciences

The Faculty of Health Sciences (the Faculty) has implemented an Internal Transfer of Course policy (available from the 'Quicklinks' menu) which clearly outlines the rules applicable to a student enrolled at La Trobe University (the University) who plans to apply for an internal transfer into another course administered by the Faculty.

With the introduction in 2009 of the Common First Year (CFY) following is a list of CFY undergraduate courses that are open to course transfer applicants:

  • Bachelor of Health Sciences
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Health Information Management
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Occupational Therapy Practice
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Orthoptics
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master or Physiotherapy Practice
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Podiatric Practice
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Speech Pathology
  • Bachelor of Nursing

there are now three types of internal transfer students as detailed hereunder:

  • Category A: Students who transfer from a course which does not have a structure incorporating the full seven CFY subjects plus one other subject (non-CFY course) to another non-CFY course;
  • Category B: Students who transfer from a non-CFY course or a course which has a structure which only incorporates some of the CFY subjects (partial CFY course) into a course which incorporates the full seven CFY subjects plus one other subject (full CFY course) or vice versa;
  • Category C: Students who transfer between full CFY courses which have both structures incorporating the full seven CFY subjects plus one other subject.

Please note that the Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Paramedic Practice will not be taking course transfers for 2010.

Students planning on applying for transfer should carefully read the Internal Transfer of Course policy and ensure they complete the correct application form/s as provided for download from the 'Forms' menu and submit the completed application to a Faculty of Health Sciences reception including all necessary supporting documentation as detailed in the policy by Friday 27 November, 2009.

  • Category A,B and C students need to complete the University Application for Course Transfer form.
  • Category C students need to also complete the Faculty of Health Sciences' Application for Internal Transfer of Course Supplementary Information form'.

Category C students should particularly note point 10 of the policy which states:

"10. Where several applicants considered under Category C are deemed to be equally worthy of selection on academic merit and the number of students exceeds the number of available internal transfer places, the course will rank students according to the mark(s) they achieved in specified CFY subject(s). The subject(s) will be specified by each course and made known to students".

These subjects are listed against each course below as are the Student Services Officer’s contact details if you have any further queries about your transfer application:

** Inherent Requirements - Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Speech Pathology English Requirements

Students should be aware that the Speech Pathology course has substantial oral and written English language requirements. It is an inherent requirement of the course that students admitted to the program possess high level English skills – sufficient to model correct English in all its forms (both written and spoken). In most of the academic subjects and in all clinical placements throughout the course, it will be assumed that students have met this requirement.

As a guideline, the following levels of achievement can be considered to meet a minimum level of English skill:

  • a study score of at least 30 in VCE English, English Language or Literature
  • an overall IELTS score of at least 7.5 (with no subtest below 7)
  • at least a B grade in final-year-of-secondary school English (obtained in a state or country where the English language is the medium of instruction)

Any student who is unsure if their level of English meets this requirement should contact the Course Coordinator in the School of Human Communication Sciences for advice (Dr Susan Block s.block@latrobe.edu.au or 9479 1801).
