Health services policy and reform

This research area is concerned with innovative changes to existing and evolving health service challenges.

This is a strong area of research in the Faculty of Health Sciences, with links with the Institute for Human Security. The focus of the work includes:  health system strengthening, health policy process, capacity assessment and building for policy and health development, comparative health policy, governance for health, community and consumer participation in policy, policy implementation tools.

This research area has a large number of higher degree students with topics such as China health policy (regulation, information for planning, community health), Bangladesh state capacity for hospital regulation, use of future studies in public health policy, policy agenda setting, public health infrastructure and capacity, NGO participation in program evaluation, national program evaluation of chronic disease self-management, and policy capacity in state health authorities. The researchers have extensive grants and contracts, including Australian Research Council Linkages, World Health Organisation, Department of Health and Ageing and a large number of AusAID projects in the Pacific and Asia.

The Department will consider any research topic that interests potential PhD students; however, students will benefit from researching in areas that align with the Faculty’s research strengths.  Please find a relevant supervisor to discuss your PhD topic.
