Research strengths

The Faculty of Health Sciences at La Trobe University conducts, facilitates and promotes a diverse range of high quality research which advances knowledge in health sciences. The faculty has received strong success in ERA rankings in many fields of research.

Building Healthy Rural Communities

Building Healthy Rural Communities is the lead research program of the La Trobe Rural Health School, overseen by Professor Jane Farmer. Our goal is to produce research that contributes to a future-oriented, community-relevant, efficient and effective model of providing health and human services for a rural region, in partnership with health and human services and communities.

Food for Life, Health and Performance

Food is necessary for life, but without the right amount and type of food we are unlikely to achieve optimal health or performance. This emerging research focus area of Food for Life, Health and Performance encompasses the application of food and nutrition across the whole spectrum with a primary focus on obesity and chronic disease.

Sex, Health and Society

The Sex, Health and Society program is hosted by the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society. The program includes two major areas of research enquiry - Sex, Gender and Sexuality; and HIV, Sexually Transmissible Infections (STIs) and Blood Borne Viruses (BBVs).

Healthy Motherhood

The overall purpose of this program is to improve the health and experiences of women giving birth in Australia.

Human Movement and Sports Science

The research being undertaken is into the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system and causes, prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and disease, with a particular emphasis on lower extremity disorders and those affecting balance and gait.

Living with Disability

The Living with Disability research program aims to generate an evidence base to inform the development of practices, programs and policies to enable community participation of people with a disability and promote their social inclusion.

Physical Activity and Rehabilitation

The Physical Activity and Rehabilitation research program is based on the premise that promoting physical activity is a major goal in the management of many health conditions. Our program aims to investigate measurement of physical activity in clinical populations, understanding the mechanisms and the physiological consequences of inactivity, evaluate the effect of interventions on physical activity, and research the best ways of implementing the evidence from research into practice.
