Clinical schools

A considerable proportion of a nurse's undergraduate education is spent in the clinical setting and the Division has established clinical schools at four different hospitals around Victoria. The schools represent various clinical environments with our clinical schools at two of the large metropolitan hospital, a large regional hospital and at a sub acute hospital. These are The Alfred Hospital, Austin Hospital, Bendigo Health Care and the Gerontic clinical school at the Bundoora Extended Care Centre.

The Division also has very close links with a number of affiliate hospitals and health care organisations including Albury-Wodonga Private Hospital, Royal District Nursing Service, Goulburn Valley Health and Mercy Hospital for Women.

La Trobe University Clinical Schools

The Alfred Clinical School of Nursing

The Clinical School is a collaborative endeavour between The Alfred and La Trobe University that offers enormous capacity for advancing the profession of nursing. The Clinical School allows the combination of resources of academic and clinical practice fields into an entity which transcends both, and provides unprecedented opportunities to integrate the full range of activities. It encourages the exchange of ideas and provides a continuum between theoretical concepts and clinical practice at all levels. The Division of Nursing and Midwifery, La Trobe University and The Alfred have a history of collaboration and cooperation going back many years.

The broad objectives of the Clinical School are to:

  • Promote interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration in health care delivery and research.
  • Establish a reputation as a leader in acute nursing research.
  • Establish a leading centre for honours and postgraduate research in acute nursing.
  • Establish a centre of excellence for undergraduate and postgraduate education in acute nursing.
  • Play a major role in the ongoing conduct of continuing education activities at The Alfred.
  • Develop clinical consultancies around areas of clinical practice.
