9. Awards and Prizes

9.1 New and Revised Proposals

In order for an award or prize to be given, it must first have University approval. Approval can be sought at anytime throughout the year, however, the award or prize must be approved by Academic Board at or before its June meeting in order to be included in the University Handbook for the following year. The award or prize is usually presented at a ceremony to which all recipients, donors and relevant staff are invited. If the donor wishes to present the award or prize at a ceremony of their own, they may do so and it is up to the School to notify the Academic Officer of this development. Both the donor and recipient are still invited to the University Awards and Prizes Ceremony.

New or revised award or prize terms of reference should be submitted to the Academic Officer on the relevant Proforma which can be found on the FO-Public fileserver (fhs-public\Awards, Prizes and Scholarships\Prizes\Prize Proforma.doc). The proposal is first submitted to FDC which requires a brief background to the award or prize as well as the title, value, tenure, selection criteria and donor of the award or prize. The award or prize is then ratified by Faculty Board before being submitted to Academic Board for approval. The final approval is given by Council.

After Council has approved the introduction or amendment of the award or prize, a letter of thanks from the Dean is sent to the Donor with a copy of the final approved terms of reference.

9.1.1 University Requirements

The prize should have:

  1. A value of at least $100 or equivalent
  2. A tenure of at least three years

9.1.2 Faculty Requirements

If an award, prize or scholarship is to be discontinued, a minimum of eighteen months notice must be given so that the entry can be removed from the University Handbook.

9.1.3 Scholarships: New and Revised

The procedure for the introduction of Scholarships is the same as that for Awards and Prizes, however the presentation to the recipient is not usually at the University Annual Awards and Prizes Ceremony.
