Terms of Reference
Composition
- Dean, or nominee
- Faculty Registrar or nominee
- A representative of Heads of Schools, or Departments
- A representative of Laboratory Managers
- A representative of Technical Services Unit
- Employee representatives (each with a designated alternate)
At least half of the members of the Committee shall be employee representatives.
Health & Safety Representatives of the following Designated Workgroups will be invited to attend the Committee as Employee Representatives:
- Health Sciences 1 Building;
- Health Sciences 2 Building;
- Health Sciences 3 Building;
- Health Sciences Clinic; and
- George Singer Building.
If a Health & Safety representative accepts this invitation, then the relevant Building Warden will be nominated as an alternate Employee Representative for that area.
If a Health & Safety Representative position is vacant or if the Representative does not accept this invitation, then the relevant Building Warden will be nominated to attend the Committee as an employee representative with the Deputy Building Warden as alternate.
The Committee will also ensure that an Employee Representative represents the Faculty of Health Sciences staff located at the City Campus, Bouverie Centre and hospital locations.
The term of office of non ex-officio positions shall be for a fixed term of two years. Elections for Committee positions shall be conducted by the University Secretariat.
Each member of the Committee shall, on appointment or election or as soon as practicable thereafter, shall attend an appropriate occupational health and safety course.

The following staff may attend the Occupational Health & Safety Committee meeting:
- Manager (OH&S) (or nominee)
- Manager (Buildings & Grounds) (or nominee)
- Student Nominee
- Coordinator of First Aid Officers in the Faculty

To be appointed by the Dean, or nominee.
Terms Of Reference
- To facilitate cooperation between the University and employees in instigating, developing and carrying out measures designed to ensure the health and safety of employees, students, visitors and contractors;
- To formulate and review policies, procedures and standards for executive OH&S Committee approval which relate to health and safety of staff, students, contractors and visitors which are to be carried out or complied with, and to disseminate those policies, procedures and standards;
- To instigate, monitor and review occupational health and safety programs within the Faculty or Zone in (but not limited to) the following areas:
- Workplace audits and inspections
- Hazard management
- Emergency preparedness
- Training programs
- Accident investigations
- Reporting
The Committee shall meet at intervals not exceeding three months but half of the members of the Committee may require a meeting of the Committee to be held at any time. The Committee shall report to the executive OH&S Committee after each meeting.
Note: The above composition if the recommended structure. However, the inherent nature of activities performed in the Zone should be taken into account and reflected in the representation of the Committee. The membership can by agreement be increased or amended to ensure that issues are properly addressed and that the Committee can function effectively.
