Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is the principal research training degree in the University. It requires up to 4 years (equivalent full-time) research within the University under the guidance of a supervisor. It is also possible to be admitted as a part-time candidate. A PhD thesis shall not exceed 100,000 words. The candidate should demonstrate a capacity for independent research and an ability to make a substantial and original contribution to learning.

Admission Requirements

The normal requirement for admission as a candidate is at least an upper second class honours bachelor's degree or a master's degree. Either degree course must have included a substantial research dissertation as part of the requirements of the course. Prospective students should contact the relevant School to discuss possible candidature prior to applying. Applications are made through the University's Research and Graduate Studies Office.
