Maria Platt Why just study for three years to produce a lengthy thesis when you can also make it an adventure? As I write this I am in Indonesia conducting my field research for my PhD. At the end of my PhD, I won’t have purely gained the necessary research skills to complete a thesis. I will also have experienced the challenge of learning to navigate another culture, significantly improved my Bahasa Indonesia skills and have gained valuable practical experience in a developing country, observing the activities of women’s organisation that deal with gender and reproductive health. As I prepare for a career in the area of gender and reproductive rights my PhD is a fantastic platform from which to launch myself forward. When I first started my PhD at ARCSHS, together with my supervisors, we planned a PhD that would provide me with enhanced vocational skills, as well as a postgraduate qualification. This was just one of the things that attracted me to ARCSHS. I was also impressed by the collegiate atmosphere amongst the staff and the supportive post-graduate environment. While undertaking my PhD has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life to date, it is a decision that I have never once regretted. PhDs don’t have to just be about reading endless amounts of literature, being chained to a computer or stuck in a lab but they can also be a rewarding life experience that opens up new windows on the world and exciting opportunities.
