Welcome to the Department of Paramedics

The introduction of the Bachelor of Health Science and Master of Paramedic Practice is an exciting new program that reflects the Faculty’s innovative approach.

What is Paramedic Practice?

A paramedic is a health professional, generally a member of the ambulance service, who provides pre-hospital advanced medical and trauma care.

Key responsibilities of paramedics are to provide on-scene emergency management, crisis intervention, stabilisation and transport of patients to specific areas of care including hospitals and other health centres. The course is unique in its focus on community practice, with a strong emphasis on public health and the changing role of the paramedic in today's health care continuum.

Course Description and Structure

This exciting course gives beginning practitioners the knowledge and skills necessary to commence practice within the ambulance industry. Graduates will have a strong knowledge of the sciences applicable to paramedicine, including assessment, interpretation, clinical skills, advanced clinical decision making, risk management, quality assurance, Occupational Health and Safety and infection control within a broad range of pre-hospital environments. The course also encompasses broader professional practice including disaster and emergency management, health systems, professional ethics and legal responsibilities, education and research, administration, and personal and professional development.

The 1st year of the Albury Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton courses will be conducted at the Albury Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton campuses respectively, whilst the 2nd year will be spent in Bendigo.  During the 3rd and 4th years clinical placements may occur throughout rural Victoria or metropolitan Melbourne.

Career Opportunities

The course will prepare students with the knowledge and skills necessary to commence employment with the ambulance services.  Graduates are eligible to apply for positions offered by ambulance organisations, both nationally and internationally. The structure and design of the course ensures that graduates can provide holistic, high quality out-of-hospital care to clients in both routine and challenging situations.
