Roles include counsellor, human services officer, school counsellor, relationships counsellor, personnel officer, human resources consultant, human resources development officer, community health care worker and tertiary lecturer.

Career opportunities

Graduates may work in community health, clinics, student counselling, private practice, EAP, consultation and specialist positions. Our course is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and you are eligible for national registration as a psychologist and full membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS). After a further year of supervised professional experience, you are eligible for membership of the APS College of Counselling Psychologists.

Course description
This course aims to give students theoretical knowledge and a range of professional skills that fit a variety of professional roles. It encourages both positivist and post-positivist methods as representations of a scientist practitioner model. Content involves experiential learning; candidates are expected to bring personal material into teaching through practical exercises, such as the use of family origin material, group processes and individual counselling sessions.
Prerequisite
APS-accredited three-year psychology qualification with minimum B grade average or equivalent across all years, and APS-accredited fourth year with minimum H2A result, or equivalent.

Additional costs
Students have to pay for class notes for the Research Seminar A subject and for accommodation and food for a single residential weekend group workshop.

Course description
This program aims to produce practitioners who can work competently with clients across the lifespan (in group and individual settings), engage in high levels of reflection in relation to professional practice, make productive use of clinical supervision, and demonstrate general knowledge of pharmacological treatment relevant to psychological disorders. It encompasses interpersonal process, core conflictual schema, psychodynamic systems, communication and developmental perspectives of psychological distress and disorder and its treatment and resolution. APAC-accredited fourth year in psychology at an Australian university with A or near-A grade average, or equivalent APS-ratified equivalent.

  • Fee-paying (where you pay the full cost of the course). FEE-HELP is available.
  • CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), subsidised by the Commonwealth Government where you pay a contribution towards course costs. HECS-HELP is available.

Students enrolled for certain postgraduate coursework programs may be eligible for student income support.

English Language Requirements
IELTS (Academic) score of 7.5 with no individual band score less than 7; or TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 625 with a score of 6 or better in the Test of Written English; or TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 263 with a score of 6 in essay writing; or TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 104 with no individual score less than 26; or Completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B certificate at postgraduate (EFS PG2b (80%)) level conducted by La Trobe Melbourne; or Approved equivalent
Academic entry requirements
Admission is restricted to people who have satisfactorily completed an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC)-approved fourth year in psychology at an Australian university at an A to B Grade average, or approved international equivalent as ratified by the Australian Psychological Society (APS). Applicants are ranked on the basis of documented evidence of past academic and professional performance. Applicants are advised to seek ratification with the APS well before the application deadline (28 October 2011). Experience in counselling is given consideration in the selection process. In addition, professional references, work experience, and the likelihood of an applicant fulfilling the personal and professional requirements of a program are taken into consideration in accepting applications.
Special requirements
Students are required to obtain a National Police check (A$15) and Working With Children (WWC) check (no charge) before undertaking a clinical professional placement. Your study experience

Counselling psychology placements

Placements form 25% of our program. You will do at least 120 days of supervised internship at three agencies that must include at least 240 hours of supervised client contact.
