Brief profile

Dr Stephen McNally, is a senior research fellow at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society. He is responsible for the International social research program at ARCSHS.

His work is influenced primarily by Anthropological training. Dr McNally also has a background in Development Studies.  Broad research areas cover HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B and co-infections.  Research interests are directed towards marginalised groups within Australia and throughout Asia and the Pacific.  Within these broad areas, Stephen focuses on issues relating to HIV as a development issue, HIV and treatment in developing countries, Men Who Have Sex With Men (MSM) and HIV, specifically in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.  Hepatitis C and B work is concerned about access to treatment for various marginalised groups throughout Australia.

He managed the HIV Social Research Capacity Building Program for ARCSHS from 2008-2012 in Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Pacific Islands. This AusAID funded program concentrated on building social research skills for academics and the community sector throughout South-east Asia.

With Dr Grierson from ARCSHS and Dr Hidayana from The University of Indonesia, he is currently working on the largest suite of social research ever conducted with gay men and MSM in Indonesia.
