Brief profile
Sharon has more than 20 years experience in fields related to food and nutrition, working in food service, community and clinical dietetics in Australia, the United Kingdom and Turkey. In recent years Sharon has spent time working between King’s College University in London and Istanbul where she opened and ran a cooking school dedicated to teaching Ottoman and Turkish cuisine. Sharon has written widely about Ottoman and Turkish cuisine and is currently researching and writing two books – ‘Turkish Cheeses’ and ‘Preserving Foods’.

Currently Sharon splits her time between La Trobe where she is developing the food related subjects with the Nutrition and Dietetics course and Doutta Galla Community Health Services where she works on food security issues for central Melbourne’s homeless population.
Sharon’s research interests include examining the social, financial and nutritional effects of providing a subsidised meal at local cafes for homeless people. Other interests includes local food production and cooking habits amongst Turkish people, changes with time and migration from rural areas to cities. Loss of Ottoman cooking practices, including ingredients and methods, within modern-day Turkish cuisine.
