Brief profile

David Azul (né Scheidt) is a speech-language pathologist, researcher, (academic and creative) writer and sound performer who has been teaching at La Trobe University in various roles since 2005.

After having completed his Bachelor and Master’s degree in speech-language pathology at the University of Aachen, David worked for six years as a clinician and lecturer of speech-language pathology in Germany. In 2005 he was awarded scholarships to do his PhD at La Trobe University. His PhD thesis, entitled The Intimate Life of My Voice: Writing, Sounding, (Gender) Performance, is a collection of written texts and audio recordings that perform, examine and critique notions of (life) writing, voice, communication, gender, subjectivity, performativity and performance. During his doctoral research David worked as a clinical educator at La Trobe University’s student voice and fluency clinics and taught various subjects in feminist studies, literary studies and writing at La Trobe University’s English department. Since 2012 he has been employed as a lecturer of speech pathology at the La Trobe Rural Health School in Bendigo.

David publishes in German and in English. He is interested in bringing innovation to research and clinical practices by producing work that brings the creative and the critical together and that is informed by transdisciplinary theories.
