Department of Allied Health
We deliver the well regarded occupational therapy, podiatry, physiotherapy, speech pathology and the new course of exercise physiology at La Trobe University in northern Victoria.
Our occupational therapy course has an emphasis on working in and with rural communities, providing students with opportunities for fieldwork placements in locations close to where they came from. Occupational therapists enable people all ages who may have mental illness or injuries to do the tasks and fulfil roles they need and want to do.
Our podiatry course provides rural students the opportunity to become highly skilled health care practitioners. Podiatrists assess, diagnose and treat foot and lower limb problems, and are valued members of health care teams. Students complete clinical placements in various rural locations, including those close to where they came from.
Our physiotherapy course offers rural students the opportunity to become skilled in addressing a wide range of community health needs. Physiotherapists assess and treat pain, movement disorders and disabilities using physical techniques such as the application of electrophysical agents, mobilisation, manipulation, movement rehabilitation and exercise. Students are able to complete clinical placements in their rural communities.
Our speech pathology course offers rural students the opportunity to become highly skilled professionals who can work across a variety of health, community, and educational settings. Speech pathologists assess and treat adults and children with communication and swallowing disorders. Students gain clinical experiences through a range of placements, including those located close to where they came from.
Our exercise physiology course prepares students to design and deliver client-centered exercise programs to athletes, healthy people and people with chronic illness or injuries. Students apply a comprehensive knowledge of exercise science and health to clinical situations and undertake supervised clinical practice to consolidate these skills. Exercise physiologists practice in a range of settings, including clinical and community.
