I graduated from Lincoln Institute of Health Sciences, Melbourne in 1974 and during the ensuing four years worked at three major metropolitan centres: the Alfred Hospital, involved in the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of communication disorders; Greenvale Rehabilitation Centre, managing acquired communication disorders in the elderly; and Sunbury Community Health centre, treating children with delayed language and phonology.

During 1979-1980 I lived in Athens, Greece working for the Hellenic Society for Disabled Children. I was involved in the treatment of children with Cerebral Palsy aged between 5-18 years.

On my return from Greece I was consultant to Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in Melbourne, managing communication disorders resulting from infectious diseases. I also acted as consultant to Bethesda Hospital, Melbourne, treating clients with communication disorders resulting from road traffic trauma.

I commenced my academic career at La Trobe University in 1980. I have taught a wide variety of theory subjects and supervised speech pathology students in a variety of external clinics and internal Voice and Fluency clinics.

In recent years my theory teaching has focussed on subjects which facilitate the role transition of speech pathology student to speech pathology professional. My interest in voice disorders and stuttering continues to evolve through supervision of students in clinics specialising in the management of these disorders and through various research activities.
