The onset of stuttering

Stuttering usually begins between the ages of 2 and 5 years. It can begin quite suddenly or gradually10.
Stuttering can also fluctuate in severity, or be relatively stable. A child may also stutter more when they are tired or excited.

Normal disfluency?

Not all children go through a period of disfluency (disruption of flow). Therefore any child who is disfluent should be carefully monitored.

Some disfluency resolves naturally, without any Speech Pathology intervention. However, it is difficult to predict who will stutter and who will grow out of it. Therefore, if you hear any disfluency (lasting 3-6 months), refer to a Speech Pathologist.
