Glossary


Blocking: Occurs when there is a cessation of airflow and therefore no sound comes out. The child may attempt to speak but appear to struggle to get the word out. Blocking usually occurs at the start of a word.
Conjunction: a little word used to join together two or more phrases or words. For example, ‘and’, ‘or’ and ‘but’.
Interjections (also known as ‘fillers’): Interjections are the frequent insertion of words like ‘um’ and ‘ah’.
Prolongation: stretching out of a sound in a word for an abnormal duration.
Repetition: repeating a sound, syllable, word, phrase or sentence.
Secondary behaviours: other behaviours which accompany the primary features of stuttering.
Stuttering: a disruption to the flow of speech.
