WHAT IS LITERACY?


Literacy refers to reading and writing skills.  It builds on oral language skills such as speaking and listening.


WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR CHILD'S
LITERACY SKILLS


- Read aloud to your child.
- Make story time interesting, dramatic and fun.

- Look at alphabet books.
- Set a good example- have your child observe you reading the newspaper/books etc.
- Write your child's name on art work etc.
- Show your child how to write his name- one letter at a time.
- Have pencils and textas available for your child to write with.


DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES OF EARLY LITERACY


6-12 months:   
Reaches for a book 
Turns the pages with adult help
Looks at pictures

12-18 months:
Turns board pages
Holds the book correctly
Points to pictures

18-24 months:
Turns pages 1 at a time 
Names familiar pictures
Pretends to read

24-36 months:

Recites phrases
Reads familiar book to self
Protests when adults get words wrong

3 years and up:
Handles book competently
Listens to longer stories
Moves finger along text
