Course Description

This four-year degree allows you to choose from four specialist education areas, all with classroom experience. Specialise in teaching primary school; primary and middle school; primary and secondary school; or primary school and special education. All four areas are available at our Bendigo Campus and primary school teaching is available at our Mildura Campus. Each begins with the fundamentals of teaching before you move on to study subjects relevant to the specialisation you've chosen. You'll complete 80 days of teaching placement to develop your own teaching method, learning from qualified teachers in real classroom situations. All students, by the end of the course, must have demonstrated the ability to meet the professional expectations for a beginning teacher.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Graduates from the course are eligible for employment in government, Catholic and independent schools in Victoria, other Australian states or overseas. Graduates may also pursue a range of careers in the human services and training sectors.

Upon course completion each student's academic record is released to VIT for teacher registration purposes. Students who do not want their academic record released to VIT must notify their course co-ordinator in writing or email before the end of teaching in their last subject.

Admission requirements

Applicants must satisfy the University’s normal entrance requirements, including VCE Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics; and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in English other than EAL.

Working with Children Check

The Victorian Department of Education and Training requires  a satisfactory criminal record check for all teacher education students undertaking practicum requirements in Victorian Department of Education and Training schools. It is expected that equivalent requirements will exist for all other Victorian schools. Before starting the course, you will be required to complete a Working with Children Check application. You must provide a certified copy of your valid Working with Children card before starting teaching placements. Confirmation of a criminal record may jeopardise a student’s ability to gain access to a suitable, or any, practicum placement(s) and may therefore delay or prevent completion of the course.

Course structure

The course is a four-year full-time program. Subjects are 15 credit points except where indicated.

Commencing students are required to complete the subject ABS0WOM, Wominjeka La Trobe: Indigenous Cultural Literacy for Higher Education. ABS0WOM is a zero-credit-point subject that you are required to complete at the commencement of your first semester. The subject is designed to introduce students to Indigenous Australian perspectives, experiences, history, culture and customs
