Bachelor of Physical and Outdoor Education
Course code/s: Bendigo (EBPOEB)
The program provides a qualification to teach in secondary schools in the specialist areas of Physical Education and Outdoor Environmental Studies. Subjects are categorised as Teaching Studies, Curriculum Studies, Discipline Studies and Electives. Practicum and Field Experience subjects provide essential school-based and practical experiences that contextualise the theoretical components of the course. By the end of the course all students must have demonstrated the ability to meet the professional expectations for a beginning teacher.
Professional recognition
The course entitles graduates to apply for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as specialist teachers of Years 7 to 12 Outdoor Environmental Studies and Physical Education. VIT-registered graduates are eligible for employment in schools.
Upon course completion each student's academic record is released to VIT for teacher registration purposes. Students who do not want their academic record released to VIT must notify their Course Administrator in writing or email before the end of teaching in their last subject.
Admissions requirements
Applicants must satisfy the normal University entrance requirements. Units 1 and 2 - two units (any study combination) of general mathematics or mathematical methods (either); Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English; and a study score of at least 25 in one of physical education or health and human development or outdoor and environmental studies. Applicants should complete and submit a VTAC Pi form if they wish other information to be considered.
Working with children check
Students will be required to complete a ‘Working with Children Check’ form available at Australia Post offices. Students must provide a certified copy of their valid ‘Working with Children’ card prior to undertaking teaching placements. Confirmation of a criminal record may jeopardise a student’s ability to gain access to a suitable, or any, practicum placement(s) and may therefore delay or prevent completion of the course.
Course structure
The course is a four-year full-time program. It consists of 480 credit points of study. All subjects are 15 credit points except where indicated.
Students must successfully complete years one to three prior to commencing fourth year.
