Bachelor of Outreach and Community Education
Course code/s: Melbourne (EBOCE)
This course, in addition to providing students with a generalist primary teaching qualification and a specific secondary qualification, provides the essential background for students who wish to teach and work in areas other than the standard school environment. The course is designed to prepare students to undertake such roles as students wellbeing teachers in disadvantaged schools where they will focus on increasing student participation and retention rates. Students will be trained as secondary teachers in the methods of student welfare and one of English, maths, science, English as a Second Language (ESL) or drama. It is anticipated that graduates of this course will be qualified to work in outreach and community facilities such as drug rehabilitation programs, youth detention facilities and council outreach programs for disengaged youth. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 80 days of teaching placements in schools during the four years of their degree.
Professional recognition
The course provides graduates with accreditation to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as secondary teachers in the methods of student welfare and one of English, maths, science, ESL or drama, and as generalist teachers in primary schools. Students complete a sub-major in social work subjects that equips them to take on welfare positions in schools and areas other than the standard school environment.
Upon course completion each student's academic record is released to VIT for teacher registration purposes. Students who do not want their academic record released to VIT must notify their Course Administrator in writing or email before the end of teaching in their last subject.
Admissions requirements
Applicants must satisfy normal university entry, including Units 1 and 2 -two units of general mathematics or mathematical methods (either) or Units 3 and 4 mathematics (any) and Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. Special entry provision for NONYR12 is available.
Working with children check
The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development require a satisfactory criminal record check for all teacher education students undertaking practicum requirements in Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development schools. It is expected that equivalent requirements will exist for all other Victorian schools. Prior to commencing the course, students will be required to complete a ‘Working with Children Check’ form available at Australia Post offices. Students must provide a certified copy of their valid ‘Working with Children’ card prior to undertaking teaching placements. Confirmation of a criminal record may jeopardise a student’s ability to gain access to a suitable, or any, practicum placement(s) and may therefore delay or prevent completion of the course.
