Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Paramedic Practice

The first year of this course is taught at the respective campus of offer with subsequent years being taught at the Bendigo campus.

Course Duration: 4 years

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills to commence practice with ambulance services. Graduates will have a strong knowledge of the sciences basic to paramedicine and paramedic practice, including assessment, interpretation, clinical skills, safety, risk management and quality assurance, occupational health and safety and infection control, and care in pre-hospital environments. The course is unique in its focus on community practice, with a strong emphasis on chronic disease management. Students will also cover broader professional practice areas such as disaster and emergency management, health systems, professional ethics and legal responsibilities, administration, education, and personal and professional development.

Course structure

In first year, students undertake an interdisciplinary common year, focusing on basic human biosciences and factors influencing health, and on developing an understanding of the roles of health professionals in the health and welfare sectors. The second year will focus on a range of health sciences subjects including counselling skills, community health promotion, and law and management in the health sector. The final two years will see students develop skills specific to paramedicine and more specialised paramedic content. Students will undertake professional placements across the four years of the program, with the first two years focusing on community-based health services. In the third and fourth years, professional placements will focus on work-based learning in hospitals, community settings, and with Ambulance Victoria. Note that the first year of the course at the Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton campus will be conducted at those respective campuses but students will complete the second, third and fourth years at Bendigo campus.
