Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is intended for persons with strong theoretical and research interests who have a primary commitment to scholarship, research, teaching, and professional training, usually in an academic setting. The PhD is undertaken by supervised research culminating in a thesis of approximately 75,000 words. It is assessed by external examiners and is required to make an original contribution to knowledge.
Duration
The period of candidature is three to four years full-time or four to eight years part-time.
Admission requirements
The usual minimum requirement for admission to candidature for PhD is the completion of a Masters degree by Research or, in some instances, a Masters degree including a shorter minor thesis. Applicants with a high Honours degree are eligible to apply. In addition, applicants must demonstrate, by their academic achievements and references, their ability to undertake work at Doctoral level.
