Graduate Diploma in Technology Education
Course code/s: Melbourne (EDGTE), Bendigo (RGTE), Albury-Wodonga (EDGTEW)
Not available at Bendigo or Albury-Wodonga in 2012.
The course provides a specialist qualification to teach in secondary schools in the specialist areas of Technology and Vocational Education and Training (VET). In Years 7 – 10 technology is an integrated strand of studies that includes design, creativity and technology. At the VCE level, the Technology curriculum becomes more specialised and includes: (i) Design and Technology; (ii) Food and Technology; and (iii) Systems Engineering. Graduates will teach in one or more of these areas and also in the VCE VET and/or VCAL.
Upon course completion each student's academic record is released to the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) for teacher registration purposes. Students who do not want their academic record released to VIT must notify their Course Administrator in writing or email before the end of teaching in their last subject.
Duration
The course is two years full-time or three years part-time.
Admission requirements
To be eligible for entry to the course, applicants must satisfy one or more of the following requirements:
- Certificate of Proficiency of the Victorian Industrial Training Commission or equivalent, and substantial relevant work experience such that the period of apprenticeship and work experience totals not less than eight years
- A Certificate of Technology or other approved two year, full-time, post-Year 11 TAFE certificate or equivalent, plus at least six years of relevant work experience
- Diploma or other approved two year, full-time, post-Year 12 qualification, or equivalent, plus at least two years of relevant work experience
- Other such vocational qualifications and occupational experience as may be deemed by the university and the Victorian Institute of Teaching to be at least equivalent to one of the above.
Special requirements
The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development requires a satisfactory criminal record check for all teacher education students undertaking practicum requirements in Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development schools. It is expected that equivalent requirements will exist for all other Victorian schools. Students upon first enrolling in this course will be required to complete a ‘Working with Children Check’ form available at Australia Post offices. Students must provide a certified copy of their valid Working with Children card prior to undertaking teaching placements. Confirmation of a criminal record may jeopardise a student’s ability to gain access to a suitable, or any, practicum placement(s) and may therefore delay or prevent completion of the course.
