Graduate Diploma in TESOL
Course code/s: Melbourne (EDGET)
This is an advanced professional qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The course covers a range of areas relating to TESOL including the nature and structure of written and spoken English, teaching methodology, and issues in bilingualism, materials design and curriculum and intercultural communication. The course is suitable for teachers wishing to upgrade their qualifications. Graduates with appropriate pre-service teaching qualifications are qualified for employment in all TESOL sectors.
Duration
The course is one year full-time or two to three years part-time.
Admission requirements
Applicants will normally have a recognised teaching qualification of at least four years’ duration.
Applicants with a degree who do not meet this requirement may make application for special entry based on appropriate work experience and/or a commitment to working in TESOL programs for which a general teaching qualification is not a requirement. In such cases, the course may provide a recognised TESOL qualification but will not qualify candidates to teach in schools and some adult education programs in Australia.
Working with Children check
Students must provide a certified copy of their valid Working with Children card prior to undertaking teaching placements.
Course structure
The course has a total of 120 credit points chosen from the list below. A course adviser assists with the selection of subjects to suit individual needs.
A 22-days’ supervised language teaching practice component is an optional subject. Most TESOL employers in Australia, including schools, require candidates to have successfully completed a practicum requirement. Overseas students should check with their relevant accreditation authorities in regard to the teaching practice option.
All subjects are 15 credit points except where indicated.
