Graduate Diploma in Computing

Course code/s: RGC - Bendigo

This course is not offered in 2012

The Graduate Diploma in Computing is designed for graduates from another discipline. It provides a sound basis for students wishing to apply computing knowledge to their first field of expertise, or those intending to move into computing-based fields of employment.

Admission requirements

An undergraduate degree or equivalent from a recognised institution is required. Non-graduates with considerable computing experience may qualify following a successful interview.

Course progression

Students can elect to graduate with a Graduate Certificate in Computing after completing four subjects (60 credit points). Conversely, this Graduate Diploma subsumes the Graduate Certificate in Computing. For students requiring a wider range of electives than suggested here, we recommend a third semester of study as follows:

  • Graduate Certificate in Computing followed by the Graduate Diploma in IT
  • Graduate Diploma in Computing followed by the Graduate Certificate in Web Technology.

Course structure

The course is one year full-time, or up to five years for a part-time student (normally being completed within three years). Students are required to complete eight 15-credit point semester subjects (total 120 credit points). There are four core subjects in software development and information systems. There are also, however, three other ‘principal electives’: Business Computer Networks – Business Data Structures (which is a prerequisite for many other elective subjects) – and Web Development (which is widely expected by employers). Following these recommendations leaves room for one true elective.

Students are not obliged to follow these recommendations, but their program is subject to approval by the course coordinator. Any elective from the list under the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology may be chosen, provided its prerequisites are met.
