Faculty Awards

AlburyCity Student Scholarship ($1500)

Awarded to a talented student from the Albury-Wodonga area who is studying in the Department of Social Work and Social Policy at the Albury-Wodonga campus in their final year of study and who has demonstrated their commitment to the future of their profession within their local community.

The Bernard Rechter Graduate Research Prize for Honours ($1000 and certificate)

Awarded to the Honours student completing the most outstanding Honours thesis in the Faculty of Health Sciences each year. This award is in recognition of the contributions made by Professor Bernard Rechter in his role as Director of the Lincoln Institute of Health Sciences, the antecedent of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Dean’s Honour List (certificate and notation on academic record)

The Dean’s Honour Lists is an annual recognition of outstanding academic achievement by undergraduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences. It is awarded to the top 5% of the Faculty's undergraduate students who complete a total of at least 60 credit points, pass all of their enrolled subjects and achieve a weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 80%.

Graduate Research Prize (Masters by Research/PhD) ($250)

One prize is awarded to the postgraduate student or students completing the most outstanding graduate diploma project or masters by coursework minor thesis project. Nominations close on 31 December.

The Hugh Batten Graduate Research Prize for Masters by Coursework ($1000 and certificate)

Awarded to the Masters by Coursework student who completes the most outstanding Masters by Coursework minor thesis in the Faculty of Health Sciences each year. This award is in recognition of the contributions made by Professor Hugh Batten in his role as Dean of the Lincoln School of Health Sciences.

The Judith Lumley Scholarship

Judith Lumley is the founding director of Mother and Child Health Research and a world renowned researcher in maternal health. To recognise the contribution that Judith has made to the Faculty and the community more broadly, the Faculty has established the Judith Lumley Scholarship, an esteem award for a high achieving research student studying with Mother and Child Health Research.

Margaret and Alan Hamer Research Prize ($250)

Heads of Schools may nominate undergraduate students for this prize based on the standard of a research project completed while on a course. A group of students that jointly completes a research project may also be nominated. Nominations close on 31 December.

Postgraduate Coursework Excellence Award ($1000)

Awarded to the postgraduate coursework student with the highest weighted average.

SCU/Lincoln Awards (up to $1000)

Several awards of up to $1000 may be awarded annually to students in second-year or above enrolled in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Stephen Duckett Graduate Research Prize for Higher Degree by Research ($1000 and certificate)

Awarded to the Doctor of Philosophy or Professional Doctorate by Research candidate who completes the most outstanding Higher Degree by Research thesis in the Faculty of Health Sciences each year. This award is in recognition of the contributions made by Professor Stephen Duckett in his role as the inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Clinical and Professional Placements

Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship and Support Scheme (NAHSSS) Clinical Placement Scholarship

Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) administers the allied health streams of the Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship and Support Scheme (NAHSSS). Funding is provided by the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA). This scholarship supports allied health and oral health students to undertake a clinical placement in a rural or remote Australian community during their degree. Professional Placement Travelling Grant

This is a competitive grant offered to assist Health Sciences students meet additional accommodation, travel and other living costs incurred as a result of undertaking a professional placement in a location 100 kilometres, or more, from their usual place of residence. The grant is only available to those undertaking a professional placement of more than one week in duration. Each grant is valued at $20 per day of placement with a maximum of $100 per week. Clinical Vision Sciences

Diana Craig Memorial Prize ($250 and certificate)

This prize commemorates the contribution of Diana Craig to Orthoptics. It is awarded by Orthoptics Australia (Victorian Branch) for the most outstanding research thesis undertaken in the Orthoptics Honours program. The prize consists of a cheque for the amount of $250 and a certificate.

J Ringland Anderson Prize ($250 and certificate)

Awarded annually by the Orthoptics Australia. This award is granted to a Victorian Orthoptics student who receives the highest aggregate marks in the subjects that involve the study of the Orthoptic investigation and management of strabismus. The prize consists of a cheque for the amount of $250 and a certificate.

Leonie Collins Memorial Prize

Awarded to the best fourth-year student presentation at the La Trobe University Annual Orthoptic Clinical Education Conference. The prize is an engraved plaque.

Gerontology

VPGH Postgraduate Prize in Gerontology ($5000)

Awarded to a postgraduate research student studying and researching in the field of gerontology. Open only to domestic postgraduate students studying and researching into the area of gerontology. This is a single award donation, for 2011, but may be extended.

Health Information Management

Clinical Classification Prize ($50 and certificate)

Awarded annually, by the Health Information Management Association of Australia (Victorian Branch),  to the student in the Master of Health Information Management with the highest aggregate score in the Year 1 health classification subjects.

Health Information Management Association of Australia (Vic. Branch) Prize ($250 and certificate)

Awarded annually by the Health Information Management Association of Australia (Victorian Branch) to the Bachelor of Health Information Management Pass or Honours degree student who demonstrates academic excellence, with the highest aggregate score in the third-year and fourth-year Health Information Management and related specified subjects.

Dorothy Bell Prize for Health Informatics ($250 book voucher)

This award acknowledges the contribution made by the late Dorothy Bell to the profession of health information management and to health information management education. Awarded to the Master of Health Information Management student who gains the highest marks in the final health informatics subject.

Jill Whitfield Prize for Health Data Analysis A ($250 book voucher)

This award acknowledges the contribution made by the late Jill Whitfield to health information management education at La Trobe University. Awarded to the Master of Health Information Management student who gains the highest marks in Health Data Analysis A.

Human Biosciences

Department of Human Biosciences Prize ($100)

Awarded to the student with the highest aggregate in the third-year physiology subjects, HBS3APA Advanced Physiology A and HBS3APB Advanced Physiology B.

Human Biosciences & Public Health

School of Public Health and Human Biosciences Health Studies Second Year Prize in the Bachelor of Health Sciences ($100 bookshop voucher)

Awarded to the top first-year student, enrolled in the three-year Bachelor of Health Sciences degree, who attains the highest weighted average mark in the seven core subjects of the Common First Year.

School of Public Health and Human Biosciences Health Studies Second Year Prize in the Bachelor of Health Sciences ($100 bookshop voucher)

Awarded to the top second-year student, enrolled in the three-year Bachelor of Health Sciences degree, who attains the highest weighted average mark in second year at Melbourne and Bendigo campuses (irrespective of discipline stream).

The Oxford University Press Prize for HLT1PHW ($100 bookshop voucher)

Awarded to the student with the highest mark in HLT1PHW (Perspectives on Health and Wellbeing) at each of the campuses: Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Melbourne, Mildura and Shepparton.

The Costigan Prize for Excellence ($100 bookshop voucher)

Awarded by Pearson Publishing to the student with the highest mark in PHE1IDH (Individual Determinants of Health) in each of the Common First Year Sections A & B at Melbourne campus, and Section C at Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura and Shepparton campuses.

The Human Biosciences Common First Year Prize ($100 bookshop voucher)

Awarded by Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins Publishing Company to the student with the highest mark in the human biosciences subjects HBS1HBB Human Biosciences B, in each of the Common First Year Sections A & B at Melbourne campus, and Section C at Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura and Shepparton campuses.

Human Communication Sciences

Andrew Dean Fildes Foundation Award for Language Learning Disabilities ($200)

Awarded to the speech pathology student who completes the best research paper related to language learning disabilities.

Freda Hooper Memorial Award ($200)

Awarded annually to a speech pathology undergraduate student who has made a significant contribution to the speech pathology field beyond the normal requirements of their course of study.

Language Learning Disability Special Interest Group Award ($200)

Awarded to the final-year student in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology who has completed a research project of high standard and/or made a significant contribution to the area of language learning disabilities.

School of Human Communication Sciences – Clinical Achievement Award ($100 and certificate)

Awarded in recognition of excellence in clinical skills. Nominations will be accepted from internal and external clinical educators. The Clinical Achievement Award will be presented to one student from each of the second, third and fourth year levels of the undergraduate Bachelor of Speech Pathology and the final year of the Master of Speech Pathology course.

School of Human Communication Sciences Honours Publication Award ($100)

Awarded to one honours year student who has a paper accepted for a peer-reviewed publication within 18 months of completing the honours program.

Speech Pathology Australia Student Award

Awarded to a final-year speech pathology student for outstanding academic achievements and/or excellent clinical achievements throughout the course, especially in the final year. The prize is a certificate and an upgrade of membership from student to full membership.

Victorian Speak Easy Association Speech Pathology Student Award ($100 and certificate)

Awarded annually to a speech pathology student who has demonstrated academic and clinical excellence in the area of stuttering and its treatment.

Victorian Voice Interest Group Speech Pathology Student Award ($200 and certificate)

Awarded to the final-year student in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology who completes the best honours research project or pass degree project related to voice science and/or voice disorders.

Winston S Rickards Prize Medal

Awarded annually (provided that there is a candidate of sufficient merit) for the best paper submitted on therapeutic principles and their application in the field of communication disorders. The prize is a medallion.

Nursing and Midwifery

Cancer Council Victoria Prize ($200)

Awarded to the student who has shown outstanding success in cancer nursing or palliative care nursing at postgraduate-level. Available for metropolitan students only.

The Caroline Pippett Memorial Prize ($300 and $200 book voucher)

Awarded to the final-year metropolitan undergraduate nursing student who clearly demonstrates a loving and caring attitude towards patients.

The Joyce Wickham Medal

Awarded to a postgraduate student when there is a candidate of sufficient merit. Any or all of the following will be taken into account when considering candidates:

  • instituted documented changes in practice in their work context
  • published paper(s) in a journal
  • presented paper(s), poster(s) at conference, or informal paper(s) at workplace
  • production of a pamphlet, document or protocol for staff or patient education
  • undertaken research, or evidence of planning research
  • involved in further study

The award is in the form of an engraved silver medallion.

Awarded to the student who has shown outstanding success in cancer nursing or palliative care nursing at postgraduate-level. Available for metropolitan students only.

McGrath Foundation Scholarship Prize (two $5000 scholarships)

Awarded to two nurses who demonstrate commitment to further study and professional development in the are of breast care nursing.

Royal College of Nursing, Australia High Achiever Award

Awarded to acknowledge the efforts of a student who has achieved to the best of their ability. The prize is one year’s membership to the Royal College of Nursing Australia.

Royal Women’s Hospital Midwifery Student Research Award ($1000)

Awarded to a midwifery student, or recent graduate, to support presentation of research findings at an international or national conference.

The Villa Maria Society Aged Care Prize ($500)

Awarded to a student enrolled in an undergraduate nursing course at the Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus who has shown particular skills and interest in the area of aged care.

Occupational Therapy

OT Australia Victoria Inc. New Graduand Award for Clinical Excellence (certificate and one year's new graduand membership for OT Australia Victoria)

This prize is awarded annually to an undergraduate occupational therapy student who has achieved excellence at the highest level during their fourth year clinical placement. These students are nominated by their clinical supervisor.

Award for Excellence (Master of Occupational Therapy Practice First Year Student) ($100 cheque)

Awarded to the Master of Occupational Therapy Practice first year student with the highest weighted average overall.

Award for Excellence (Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health, Safety & Ergonomics student) ($100 cheque)

Awarded to the Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health, Safety & Ergonomics student with the highest weighted average overall upon completion of their award.

Award for Excellence (First year student) ($100 cheque)

Awarded to the first year undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Occupational Therapy Practice course with the highest weighted average in the common first year subjects.

Award for Excellence (Second year student) ($100 cheque)

Awarded to the second-year undergraduate student with the highest weighted average in the Occupational Therapy intervention subject OCT3PDC.

Award for Excellence (Third year student) ($100 cheque)

Awarded to the third-year undergraduate student with the highest weighted average overall.

Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service – Award for Excellence ($250 book voucher and certificate)

Awarded to an entry-level student with the highest weighted average in academic work, and demonstrated excellence in fieldwork, as judged by the clinical fieldwork team within the Department of Occupational Therapy.

Derek Stewart Award ($100 book voucher)

This prize honours the memory of Derek Stewart and is donated by the Mt Eliza Centre. Awarded to a first-year student from either the Master of Occupational Therapy Practice or the Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Occupational Therapy Practice courses who has demonstrated academic excellence in the area of assessment and intervention with older adults (in the subject OCT4ECA).

Honours Prize ($100 book voucher)

Awarded to the most outstanding honours student in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) or the Bachelor of Psychological Science and Master of Occupational Therapy Practice.

Janet Sloane Award ($100 cheque)

This award acknowledges the contribution Janet Sloane made to the occupational therapy profession. Awarded to the most outstanding occupational therapy student(s) for excellence in a final year research project relevant to activities of daily living, community health or ergonomics.

Lifehealthcare – Student of the Year Award ($500 and plaque)

Awarded to the most outstanding final-year student in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (and associated double degrees) or the Master of Occupational Therapy Practice achieving the highest weighted average.

School of Occupational Therapy - Award for Excellence for a Master of Occupational Health Student ($100 cheque)

This prize is awarded to the Master of Occupational Health student with the highest weighted average, overall, upon completion of their award.

Surgical Synergies Splinting Prize (books to the value of $250)

Awarded to an occupational therapy student who achieves excellence in the academic and clinical aspects of splinting.

The Alfred Group - Janet Sloane Stroke Rehabilitation Grant ($500) - reintroduced

Awarded to a student in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy who submits a suitable, high quality proposal to undertake research in the area of stroke rehabilitation in their final year.

Physiotherapy

APA Paediatric Physiotherapy Group Prize ($100 Co-Op gift voucher and certificate)

Awarded to the third year student who achieves the highest mark for the paediatric module in early life span and gender specific issues (PTY5ELG).

Aquatic Physiotherapy Group Prize (free place at Level 1 Aquatic Course and certificate)

Awarded to the final year student who shows outstanding ability in the field of hydrotherapy in their final year clinical placement electives.

BakBalls Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Prize ($100 Co-Op gift voucher and certificate)

Awarded to the third year student with the highest overall mark in the subject Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy - Theory and Practice.

Brooks Running Award (under review)

Awarded to the postgraduate student who displays the highest standard in the subject Professional Development for Sports Physiotherapists. The prize is a running pack which includes running shoes and other sporting apparel to the value of $500.

Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy Australia Prize (certificate and letter of congratulations)

Awarded to the final year student who gains the highest marks in the cardiorespiratory clinical experience subject.

Constance Read Memorial Prize ($100 cheque and certificate)

Awarded to the second year student who gained the highest percentage of marks in the second year Human Development & Movement subject (PTY2HDM). Donated by the Australian Physiotherapy Association Victorian Branch, in memory of Miss Constance Read, who was a physiotherapist at The Royal Children's Hospital.

Continence and Women’s Health Physiotherapy Australia Prize ($100 Co-Op gift voucher and certificate)

Awarded to the final year student who shows outstanding ability in this field of physiotherapy, the student who gains the highest aggregate mark in the third and fourth year Womens Health and Continence modules. Donated by members of the Continence and Women's Health Special Group of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

Eliza McAuley Memorial Prize ($250 cheque and certificate)

Awarded to the final year student who is most outstanding at the core clinical practice subjects. Donated by Australian Physiotherapy Association Victorian Branch in the memory of Miss Eliza McAuley, whose foresight gave a sound basis on which the course has been built.

Elsevier Australia Book Prize - Second Year ($100 Co-Op gift voucher and certificate)

Awarded to the second year physiotherapy student who shows the most outstanding ability in the field of anatomy.

Gerontology Special Group Prize (one year membership to Gerontology Special Interest Group and certificate)

Awarded to the final year student who achieves the highest mark in the subject Chronic Disease Management (PTY5CDM). Donated by the Gerontology Special Group of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

Josephine Jennings and Edith Pratt Memorial Prize ($100 and certificate)

Awarded to the final year student who achieves the highest percentage of marks over the course. Donated by Australian Physiotherapy Association Victorian Branch as a perpetual memorial to Miss Jennings and Miss Pratt, both of whom played a large part in the early training of physiotherapists in Victoria.

Kay Spencer Memorial Award (2011 - $250 book voucher, from 2012 - $300 Co-Op gift voucher and certificate)

Awarded to the student who gains the highest mark in an evidence-based practice critically appraised topic (CAT) in Neurology. The prize is in memory of Kay Spencer, a valued member of the School of Physiotherapy staff. It is provided by the Spencer family, members of staff and the Physiotherapy Students' Association.

LifeCare Health Physiotherapy Award (up to $500 reimbursement of cost of approved APA continuing education courses in first 12 months after graduation)

Awarded to the final year student with the highest result in the fourth year clinical elective, Private Practice Management.

National Neurology Group Prize ($100 Co-Op Gift voucher and certificate)

Awarded to the final year student who gains the highest marks in the neurological clinical experience subject.

Patricia Cosh Award ($100Co-Op Gift voucher and certificate)

Awarded to a student in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills.

Physiotherapy Research Foundation Research Prize ($150 and certificate)

Awarded to the final-year physiotherapy student who achieves the highest aggregate mark in the subject PTY4HON.

Podiatry

Australian Podiatry Association (Vic.) Award for Excellence

Awarded to the most outstanding fourth-year Bachelor of Podiatry student for excellence in clinical studies. The award is a 12-month membership to the Australian Podiatry Association, and malpractice insurance cover of $2,000,000.

Brooks Prize for Podiatric Medicine

Awarded to the third-year Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Podiatric Practice student who achieves the highest mark in the subject, POD5MFP Musculoskeletal Basis of Foot and Lower Limb Pathology. The prize is a $500 voucher for Brooks’ footwear and apparel.

EQUUS Podiatric Award (text books to the value of $300)

Awarded to the Bachelor of Podiatry (Honours) student who achieves the highest overall score for an Honours thesis.

Lamisil Best Final Year Podiatry Award (text books to the value of $850)

Awarded to the Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Podiatric Practice student who achieves the highest aggregate score for subjects in their fourth year.

Gwen Saunders Memorial Scholarship ($500)

Awarded to a first year Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Podiatric Practice student. Preference will be given to a student from a rural area, within Australia, and who may have experienced financial hardship.

Prosthetics and Orthotics

Australian Orthopaedic Association Prize ($100)

Awarded to the most outstanding second-year combined degree student who achieves the highest aggregate score for all prosthetics and orthotics core subjects offered in that year.

Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association Inc. (Victorian Section) Prize ($75 La Trobe Co-Op Bookshop Voucher and student membership to AOPA)

This award is given to the most outstanding first-year student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics. The prize consists of a $75 La Trobe Co-Op Bookshop book voucher and student membership to the Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association until the completion of the student's degree (including Honours, if applicable).

EH Armstrong Prize for Services to Lower-Limb Amputees ($250 La Trobe University Bookshop Voucher)

Awarded to either a Prosthetics and Orthotics postgraduate student or undergraduate student in recognition of contributions to the care and management of lower-limb amputees.

International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) Prize ($250 La Trobe University Bookshop Voucher and student membership to ISPO)

Awarded to the most outstanding third year student as judged by the results of third-year prosthetics and orthotics subjects.

Robert Gardner Memorial Prize

Awarded to the student, or students, who achieve the best results in the third-year subject POR3ISP Independent Study Project. The prize is a textbook ‘Atlas of Orthoses and Assistive Devices’ to the value of $350.

Otto Bock Clinical Excellence Award

This award is given to the outstanding student enrolled in Prosthetics and Orthotics who has achieved the highest grade average across all third-year clinical subjects. The prize consists of travel to the Otto Bock Academic in Duderstadt in Germany to undertake a two-week workshop in prosthetics and/or orthotics. This will be embedded within an eight-week clinical placement offered at the Otto Bock Academy in Germany.

Public Health

ASORC Award in Rehabilitation Counselling ($885)

Awarded annually by the Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors to the student in the Postgraduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Studies course who has demonstrated the most outstanding knowledge and skills in the field of rehabilitation counselling. The prize is one year’s free membership to the Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors professional association (value of $385) and a $500 cheque.

CRS Australia Award for Excellence in Vocational Rehabilitation ($250 book voucher)

Awarded to the most outstanding final-year student in the Postgraduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Studies achieving outstanding academic results and fieldwork reports in subjects relevant to vocational rehabilitation.

Department of Public Health Honours Thesis Prize ($250 La Trobe University Bookshop voucher and a certificate)

Awarded to the Bachelor of Health Sciences or Bachelor of Health Information Management Honours student whose thesis is judged as being the best.

Top Bachelor of Health Sciences Student ($100 La Trobe University Bookshop voucher and a certificate)

Awarded to the Bachelor of Health Sciences student with the highest aggregate score in core third-year subjects.

Social Work and Social Policy

The David Jolley Leadership Award ($500 and citation)

Awarded to the Bachelor of Social Work/Bachelor of Human Services third year student who has demonstrated a strong understanding of the value of social work and, who has also shown, outstanding leadership and excellent academic results. The award is in memory of David Jolley and is provided by Elizabeth Lowe, Ingrid Jolley and the Jolley Family.
