Master of Statistical Science – Melbourne (Bundoora) (SMST)

The course aims to provide opportunities for postgraduate students to further their understanding of the statistical modelling of physical, biological and economic phenomena so they can contribute to applied research and development in industry, commerce and research.

The course gives particular emphasis to analysis of data using computer-related technology. Students select studies from a wide range of components and complete an externally examined minor thesis in their second year.

As part of this course, students may complete subjects offered through the Key Centre of Statistical Sciences (KCSS) which comprises La Trobe University, the University of Melbourne, Monash University and RMIT. Additionally, students may also complete appropriate subjects offered nationally through the Access Grid Room network.

Admission requirements

Candidates entering with a pass Bachelor’s degree, including a sufficiently good pass in 60 credit points of third year statistics or its equivalent, require two years of full-time study to complete the course. Candidates who hold an Honours degree in statistics or equivalent enter the second year of the course.

Course structure

During the first year of the course students complete eight approved key centre subjects, each worth 15 credit points. Up to 30 credit points may be taken at the third year level, subject to approval by the Department. During the second year, students are required to complete another four approved key centre subjects, engage in a training program in statistical consulting (30 credit points) which runs over the entire academic year, and write a minor thesis (30 credit points).
