Graduate Diploma in Psychology – Melbourne (Bundoora) (SGP)

This course is not available for commencing students in 2010.

Enquiries: School of Psychological Science (03) 9479 2819.

The Graduate Diploma in Psychology provides an opportunity for graduates holding a Bachelor-level degree in another discipline to complete an Australian Psychological Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited undergraduate sequence in psychology. In addition to a Bachelor-level degree, applicants must also have completed PSY1PYA, PSY1PYB and statistical methods subject STA1PSY (or equivalent APAC-accredited subjects at another institution). The Graduate Diploma in Psychology consists of a two year sequence of psychology subjects that, in addition to the prerequisites for entry, completes the required basis for candidates who intend to apply for entry to a fourth year psychology program, subsequent postgraduate studies in psychology and/or to apply for membership of the APAC. The sequence consists of the following subjects:

The subjects which comprise the Graduate Diploma in Psychology at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus, are identical to the second and third year undergraduate psychology sequence taught in the Bachelor of Psychological Science (BpsySc), and graduate diploma students will participate and be assessed in exactly the same way as the students enrolled in the BpsySc program. Places in the graduate diploma are limited and applicants are required to meet the same entry standards, as those applying for the BpsySc. Applicants should be aware that a ‘B’ (Distinction) average across previous tertiary studies is normally required for an application to be competitive.

No evening classes are available at this time and there is no provision for external study.

Since it is not possible to advance to the next year before successfully completing the necessary prerequisite subject(s), the course will require two years of part-time study. The Graduate Diploma in Psychology is a full-fee paying course.

Prerequisite studies in psychology

Those who have not successfully completed the prerequisite subjects PSY1PYA, PSY1PYB, and STA1PSY (or equivalent APAC-accredited first year undergraduate psychology subjects at another university) may choose to apply to undertake these subjects as a miscellaneous enrolment as set out below:

Teaching Period Core Subjects Subject code Credit points
TE-SEM-1 Psychology 1A PSY1PYA 15
TE-SEM-2 Psychology 1B PSY1PYB 15
TE-SEM-2 Statistics for Psychology STA1PSY 15

Previous study in psychology at second and third (advanced) years

Applicants who have successfully completed second year undergraduate psychology subjects from an incomplete APAC-accredited course and are offered a place in the graduate diploma program may be permitted to enter at third year level, provided the first year prerequisites are met and the second year subjects completed are deemed equivalent to PSY2PYA/PSY2PYB. Candidates will normally be advised of credit (advanced standing) to be awarded when notified of the outcome of their application. If exemptions are awarded, candidates must take the requisite number of credit points in lieu. Credit can only be awarded from an incomplete degree.

Candidates are reminded that successful admission to, and completion of, a Graduate Diploma in Psychology does not guarantee admission to any other courses offered by the School.

Subject offerings may change according to available staffing resources and because of the ongoing process of evaluation and updating of content. Additional information on subjects is available from the subject database.
